IA Appreciation Thread

By angelman2, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hi all,

This is an appreciation post :-)

It’s now a year since I first bought the IA core box, and what a year it has been! My gf and I have bought everything there is to buy for this game (forsaking food for much of last fall…), and then some! We’ve played 3 campaigns by ourselves ( CORE , Jabba’s Realm , and Heart of the Empire ), and 2 campaigns with friends ( Twin Shadows & Return to Hoth ), and we’ve painted 75% or so of our miniatures already. We’re going to play Tyrants of Lothal in September by ourselves, and The Bespin Gambit with friends at some undisclosed later time (both mini-campaigns expanded into full campaigns using ally/villain pack missions etc.). (We haven’t tried Skirmish yet, but might have a go at it once the campaigns run out). Moreover, I’ve started an ambitious fan campaign project with @IanSolo_FFG that we hope to start showing off in (hopefully) a few months, and all in all, life is pretty grand right now!

This game has rekindled my SW obsession like nothing since the WEG RPG back in the 90s, and I’m walking around in a constant SW geek daze nowadays, and it is awesome! Thank you all for running/participating this wonderful community, and thanks to FFG for making a fantastic game! Ya'll are making this grumpy old dude a happy young boy :-D

Wait til you start playing skirmish

We're more of a story telling folks ourselves, and not much for competative gaming, but I bet we'll at least try out Skirmish :D

Haha that's what I thought too, until I went to a friendly local tournament and got hooked :P . I still love the campaign, though, so you really can't go wrong.

Wow, sounds like you guys really enjoy it!

We do too. It's kind of a weird period to be a Star Wars fan, with us getting more movies, comics, and books than you can shake a stick at, but having a pretty big drought of video games and a sad shift away from the interest in toys that the franchise once had.

But for board games, it's never been better, and I think Imperial Assault represents the pinnacle of what a Star Wars game should be. It's got a ton of good content so far, and hopefully that continues way into the future. I, for one, am definitely in the camp of "Add an iconic unit, even if it doesn't totally reinvent the meta", because like you say, we're storytelling people. I absolutely encourage creativity, but even if a Flame Trooper would be pretty similar to a Heavy Trooper, or if we couldn't come up with really strong reasons to include the Rogue One squad and characters like Enfys Nest, simply having them as options is good enough reason for me.

Yeah, agreed. Basically, I don't think there's anything in canon I would pass over at this point. I'd definitely buy JarJar and a gungun squad ?

Seriously though, I can't get enough of IA and with literally unlimited number of stories that could be told and canonical installments milked, I hope we get IA for decades to come :)

I feel you, angleman2! Me too, I started playing, collecting, and painting (which started it all for me) loads of Imperial Assault - it just oozes with the Flair of Star Wars unlike any Star Wars-related miniatures game ever has in my opinion. What's more: It's a great and fun game with neat Gameplay and game mechanics.

And that's without even playing skirmish!

Well said @angelman2 ! Besides being a cool game, it has introduced me big time into painting minis, something I never thought I would have the time, the patience nor the talent to do (the latter being highly subjective, but I will risk saying I'm very happy with the results so far. I'm even hand crafting Endor trees for my daughters to display her 3.75" ewok figures ... yub yub!)

It has also allowed us to put our brains together to work out some fun (I think) and thematic missions that I can't wait for the community to give them a try. You have come up with some very entertaining mission mechanics and if FFG ever runs out of mission ideas, they should look toward you!! ;)

Thank you, @IanSolo_FFG , you're too kind :) I couldn't have done it without you, man! Nope, not possible :D
