Basic gameplay question [noob]

By Canopus, in Star Wars: Destiny

I didn't have a chance yet to play SWD in any but the most casual setting - so I'd like to ask the experienced players:

Any card from the hand can be played either for its purpose (if the cost is payed) or for a reroll. How common is the latter? How many cards do you spend for rerolls in a 'normal' game? I guess that the answer depends on the type of deck, battlefield, etc., but there may be some rule of thumb?

(Searching for SWD resources, I can find good advice on deckbuilding, not so much on actual gameplay.)

I don't think there is a rule of thumb

Discarding for rerolls is very situational.

It all comes down to the question : How badly do you need better/different die rolls ?

The game is about managing odds and resources. So, when deciding to reroll, you need to consider two things:

Are the odds in my favor to get a better outcome rerolling dice?

Does the card I am discarding for a reroll feel critical to this or the next round of the game? If you have a card where you know you will have the resources to play it, it will likely have more impact as a played card than discarded. If you have a card with a high opportunity cost to play (spot something you don’t have, modify for you don’t see, high resource cost, require a combo setup, etc) then it may be more valuable to pitch the card for reroll.

Almost always choose the card with the highest opportunity cost to pitch first. Keep the cards that are more likely to have immediate impact. In this game you’re going to likely draw your entire deck in a matchup, so don’t be afraid to pitch a card now when you have another copy in your deck that you may draw in a more appropriate situation.

Last, the game situation will often dictate what to do. If your opponent is showing discard and you have one card in hand, better to discard it for an effect than to have them discard it for none. Also, watch out for mill decks. Be very conservative discarding anything from hand against them.

YouTube Star Wars Destiny and watch as much as you can stand. It will help a lot. Then go to swdestinydb.com and see what people are doing for deck building.

@gokubb Thanks for your advice.

In our early games - with rather random decks from starters etc. - we were reluctant to discard cards. Each card seems to carry some promise that it can become useful in a later turn. We usually end up with half the deck intact. Not very efficient tactics.

Yes, obviously. I was looking for generic hints that could be summarized in a few lines. If I wanted to go competitive, I certainly would invest more time (and money).

I jump in here instead of opening another topic :

The choice of the battlefield is up to each player when they build their deck, so can it happen that both players have chosen the same battlefield ? Or is there a specific rule stating that both battlefields have to be different ?

Thanks a lot,

Both players can choose the same battlefield. Deck construction limits only apply to one player, so the other player's deck has no impact on the choices you make when building your deck.

Thank you very much for your quick answer ?
