Uthuk mirror match prep

By Viktus106, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Morning all,

So whilst I have a plan for Daqan, Waiqar and Latari, I have yet to face the mirror match and with the increase in Uthuk numbers (originals and WAAC bandwagon riders), the chances of the mirror match are increasing.

So, what do people do in this situation? What are Uthuk preferred match ups here?

(FYI - Speaking from a competitive sense, not just a one off, meeting engagement with no objective match, etc)

Play cautiously. It becomes closer to chess then smash smash. Remember that most matchup logic still applies. Charge range and initiative are still big.

If both players have scuttling horror:

Remember that the player with initiative activates all of theirnscuttling horrors first. Then the player without initiative does. This means that while the player with initiative does activate first, the other zoidbergs should be better positioned. You need to make a point of guessing which way they will zoidberg and set dials accordingly. You won’t always be right, but you can usually guess the zoidberg when they aren’t near terrain.

If you don’t have Zoidbergs or rippers and they do: Stay away from terrain. Even zero capacity.

Have a big initiative bid. It sounds simplistic, but I'm totally serious...if you dictate the engagement, you probably come out ahead in a mirror. There are lots of factors of course (builds, objectives, deployments, terrain, etc.), but the choice of which turns you want initiative and how you want to control deployment/terrain is huge in the Uthuk vs. Uthuk matchup.

And like we always say on the podcast - get practice games in if you can! Proxy something up, get a friend to play it. If you can't, set it up at home and at least practice the opening. Do what you think are ideal opening moves to get some idea of when and where the engagement is likely to happen.

And above all, do not forget your sacrifices and self-mutulation before the Ynfernael.

Can we not do this? The idea that using all of the tools available to you in order to win is some sort of dirty, unsportsmanlike venture is pretty toxic in a community. Let's save social denigration for actual, literal cheating, not engaging with the mechanics of a competitive game.

As there are none ranged units in Uthuk at the moment and one of the usual opponents is Ravos with his wound ability, why not load your list with 2x1 spinethreshers?

I agree. Using good lists isn't WAAC; rushing opponents, being diffuicult about sharing open information, and being an overall jerk to throw off your opponent - that's WAAC.

My reference to a WAAC is simply someone that has purchased 200 points of Daqan, realised they weren't winning consistently, purchased 200 points of Latari, won, lost to Uthuk and then purchased 150+ points of Spined Threshers.

More power to them, but those players aren't playing a list for thematic reasons or because they love the aesthetic, they are buying and using them simply because they feel they are the strongest list possible at a given time.

Personally I dont mind. Fund the game more and jump back to Waiqur when the Vampire Lord and Wealth list ROFL stomps Uthuk into a mediocre list. :)

The term has a lot of baggage, and depending on who you ask can mean anything from literal cheating and abuse to using an army that doesn't feat narratively in the fiction, so I will generally advise against its use. I will especially do so when it's used to mean "wants to win more than wants to engage with the theme/aesthetic". Miniatures games are many things to many people, and denigrating folks that engage with different aspects is not cool.

Playing a strong list or faction is not a dirty thing, and the player that shows up with bare plastic minis whose lore they don't know is every bit as much a valid player as the one that lovingly paints and writes background for theirs. There are a lot of ways to engage with the nebulous "hobby", and the best thing about Runewars to me is how much mechanical depth there is to interact with.

Right On! And trust me I know a thing or two of being accused of being a power player! The worst is when you are the designer of list/strategy that made it powerful!

I will say Having a painted army is nice though! Attracts more to the game when everything is looking colorful and pretty! ?
