Anyone play this format? I found it fun to teach new players. Also great for game nights with 3 people that want to play Armada.
Take the Station
I played a couple of times. It is fun. Problems: when you manage to find someone to play armada and time to do it, well... you play armada.
It is very conducive to the "beer and pretzels" game night, and as a teaching game. However, I find I prefer a 2 vs 1, 800 point game to be a better game for when you only have 3 players.
It does have the distinction of being the only quick game of Armada. (Set up to clean up is about an hour.
So, yes I play it occasionally, and I am a fan.
Yeah. I gotta say that it was fun to play as part of my batchlor party. My groomsmen surprised in wanting to play. I had fun using an interdictor

Do you modify the rules at all to balance things?

Only that the 2 allied 400 point fleets each get their own admiral, while the 800 point fleet has only a single admiral. Allied ships and squadrons count as Friendly except for Admiral abilities. Usually takes about 3 hours to play a game that size.
I have recently done this at an Armada event with 3 others, one had never played before and two have not played since wave 2. I was the only one with recent experience.
The game became a great introduction and refresher for everyone and provided a new challenge for me. This works well with 3 or 4 players especially with newbies.

What, would you say,are the merits of each side? Coordinating 800 points is tricky, but having one mind behind a whole squad's side seems like an advantage.
Basically, how would you split up the experience of the players if there's an obvious imbalance?

Keep the two more experienced players on one short side and the less experienced players on the other. In the game we played the two fleets closest to each other tended to engage prior to getting to the center. I was re-evaluating who I would shoot at each round based on where I stood in the standings. I would either attack the person just in front of me score-wise or the one closest to me in points if I was ahead.
Oh! I thought you were taking about a 2v1 (2x400 v 800), that same as @cynanbloodbane . I misread. Sorry!
