Standalone deck-building for GenCon

By RogueLeafer, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Going to GenCon for the new standalone deck adventure. Any advice as I only ever built decks with a friend for campaigns. Where I'm stuck is if I'm travelling with a deck I assume I should take 2 just in case. Reading the standalone rules I get up to 9 XP without adding more weaknesses. Is there a recommended xp tier? Looking for deck suggestions that other people might not have as common with my own twist but curious if the 10-19 xp bracket is better blind than say 30-39 bracket? Or is 0-9 just fine?

I may end up taking a vacation and trying to go to Arkham Nights later this year and I'm curious what other people think about this as well. I didn't think about bringing two decks. Any reason why? I'm hoping to build a Sefina deck if I end up going.

Traveling a long way and playing with strangers. If everyone has a Jenny deck that is less fun. Wasn't going to bring every card but just having the variety to have a better group was my thinking. So I was thinking a solo deck and then a more support deck and just see what we got when we get there :)

There are something like 36 slots for each session, so you should be able to find a group to fit in even if you only bring one deck. That said, I normally bring like 4 :D Mainly for flexibility, so I can fill in multiple roles to help building the groups. I'm also playing in two sessions, and I'd like to play different decks for each, so that still gives me 3 options for the second day. Typically I'll pack a Seeker and a Guardian, then two balanced investigators.

For XP, I usually target 19XP. It's mostly going to be personal preference, but I generally find one additional weakness well worth the extra toys. Above that the weakness density starts to get a bit high for my taste. This can depend a lot on the investigator, though. Several have weaknesses that are basically irrelevant in standalone - Zoey, Jenny, Roland, etc. I feel like you can afford to go higher there since their own weakness won't really be anything but a lost card draw. Jenny especially I like at 29 - there's so much Exceptional goodness in Rogues that the XP cost adds up fast.

Awesome! Thanks for the feedback. I'll roll two 19s then, as a rookie that seems a nice number. I do see what you mean. I'm a purist so I may bring my weaknesses there and do them at the table. A few investigators ya know could have less punishment or even benefit from certain weakness, any that synergize with monster killing for reward.

I think xp depends on class. If you go Seeker, for instance, you don't really want to go above 19 xp because of all the card draw seekers tend to use. In general, I think 19 xp is a good average to shoot for.

I just built a 19 XP deck with Finn Edwards that did quite well pn Labyrinth of Lunacy. I might have fit in a few more things (Ace in the Hole), but all I really needed was a Chicago Typewriter, two lockpicks, two pickpockets, two fences and a permanent talent.

I did the Drawn To The Flame Labyrinths event in London, recently, and asked the same question of my prospective group.

My instinct was the to go 9, or 19, for similar reasons. One of my compatriots said to go higher, as how often do you get to play with all the high xp toys?! And you know what, he was totally right! One off events are a great excuse to throw caution to the wind and throw in all the high xp cards you’ve always wanted to try! I did 29xp, and had a blast, I reckon I could have gone another 10. So live dangerously, you don’t do this often, that’s my advice!

FYI, the two times I have done Labyrinths, with a epic multiplayer, I have both times used a 49 xp deck, or very close, one time was a Carolyn with 47 ish, the other time was skids with 44. Both times the extra xp cards were way more fun. Sure I drew 3 weaknesses one game, but it didn't matter because all the xp made my board state so strong. You should consider as much xp as the game lets you, unless you don't like the high xp cards, it will be worth it IMO.

I now have a ticket for Saturday morning's Eternal Struggle event! I had been checking it multiple times per day for the last several weeks, hoping that someone would cancel (or more tickets would get added). No luck. On the ride down to Indianapolis a little bit ago, happened to check it and there was one ticket available! Got it! Saturday at 10 AM. And Saturday happens to be my birthday too! I'll be trying out a new Silas deck. Pretty excited about it.
