Offical Token Used as Reminder Token Ysanne Isard

By redviperofdorne, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Is there a written rule that say you can't use an official token as a reminder token and then "activate it" when it becomes relevant?

The example I'm thinking of is putting out an evade token before the start of combat as a reminder for Ysanne Isard's ability and then "activating it" at the start of combat.

No hard-rule comes to mind, but to avoid any sort of incident I'd suggest using some sort of reminder-token that isn't otherwise used by the game for an effect.

If you do use an evade, I'd suggested painting one side full black, or put a sticker on it and when the combat phase starts you turn it around, so it's "activated". Also, ask your opponent if he minds you do that.

I concur with the suggestion to NOT use an unmodified evade token to represent Ysanne - it can lead to confusion as to why a ship has a token, especially with various cards like Comm Relays & Adv. Optics (which allow ships to carry over tokens), the Jam actions (which can strip tokens or prevent then from appearing), Coordinate actions (which might give you an evade action before you deserve one), and unexpected stress (which would prevent her evade action anyway).

One suggestion might be to take a printout of her card, and glue her face to the back of an evade token. That way, it's clearly a reminder that Ysanne is active, AND an easy way to remember to use her ability (since it's an action outside of your normal activation).

Interesting question. Generally speaking most rulesets are permissive, meaning we're only allowed to do what the rules tell us and therefore not allowed to do anything they don't specifically demand. Having extra tokens on the board could fall foul of that. In reality I don't think too many people would have a major problem with some sort of reminder token but I'd stay clear of an Evade, or any other token with a specific meaning, as that could get confusing. Some people use little models of Palpatine, for example, to remind them if he's been used or not. Something similar could work here.

You could probably also leave an Evade token on the Ysanne Isard card, but that's not going to be quite as strong a visual reminder.

I actually ran into something like this at tournament. The opponent was getting upset because the other player kept forgetting what actions they could do so they started putting tokens on the mat by his ship, as a reminder on what he could do. We ultimately decided against allowing this because having a token in the play area, with no function other than to remind a player of an action or ability, would violate the rule against taking notes. If both players were cool with it, I would have not problem at all. If its a casual game, no problem, but if you in an event, I would clear it with the TO first.

As said above putting an unmodified evade token down can be confusing. What you can do is hold onto to the token in your hand. Although I've seen people forget the action even with token in hand. I've also had people place the token during activation. Was a casual event so i didn't mind. at a regional's though I probably would request that they remember and put it down at the start of combat.

We have a person here in Queensland who when flying phantoms flips the acrylic cloak token to signal if the ship is cloaked or not.

My biggest interaction with this sort of stuff was my second tournament where I was flying RAC + Soontir. I forgot the Isard evade action late in the game and my opponent (friend of mine) said sorry but you can't do that anymore. End of the day its up to the person to remember, and how they do that needs to not upset their opponent or make them feel like they are being taken advantage of. Because a missed opportunity is important and can determine a game.

Personally have never had a problem with anything like this but It could be more dangerous now with things like Jam being played on tables.

This is my favorite suggestion! Make a custom "Isard" token :)

The FAQ explicitly permits using arbitrary tokens to mark "derived information", which includes things like how many times an effect has been used so far this round. (p. 6) Using a custom token to mark Ysanne as unused is totally legal.

I would think common sense says you can't use standard tokens for anything but their standard meaning in any game.

May be you can use a charge token from 2.0 :P

Every Isard player I've ever encountered has just asked if they can put the evade token on the ship as part of it's action step.

I've never said no, unless there's been a way to prevent it, because I'm not that guy.
