Forums are for speculations, so let’s speculate, what is “Something Big”

By Hrathen, in Star Wars: Armada

I’m not going to go through the time line of the “Something Big” announcement and the next year of nothing, except for the smallest wave including one new ship, one repaint and the most unplayable fighters squadrons in the game.

I prefer to dwell on hope. And I hope like many of you that we are getting something really big, something cool, something FFG didn’t want to compete with their announcements for Legion and X-wing 2.0

So what might it be? And what would be worth this wait?

A new wave? This just wouldn’t excite me that much. We could have this anounced earlier.

A giant ship like a SSD? Again, I know lots of people want this, and Armada has a sliding scale so the model could be released at a playable size, or it come come with a new epic-like format the way FFG did with X-wing Epic ships, but I Armada already takes a long time to play. This just istn’t that exciting for me.

A new faction? Frankly it would probably be First Order and Resistance, and this would give more variety to our game, but I pretty much only play the Empire now, I’m not sure that this would be something all that cool to me.

A new Addition? This has been amazing for X-wing, but that game had really gotten away from its core game mechanic and had an increasingly broken meta. Armada just doesn’t have that problem. I’m worried that any new addition might alienate as many people as it attracted.

I really am looking forward to the “big thing” that I hope will be anounced at Gen Con. But I really wonde3r what it could be that would really be that cool, or cool enough to justify the stagnation that we have felt in Armada for the past six months. Honestly I hope they do anounce something really really cool that makes me just wonder how I am going to find the money to throw at FFG, but I am at a loss as to what they will be doing.

(If I had my choice it would be a massive reworking of the rules to make the game go much faster, but I am pretty sure that this would likely alienate other Armada players.)

Armada 2.0 where we finally have an App like X-Wing and the interdictor costs 10 points less.

Geez, looks like Golem Arcana did one thing right it when you think about it...

A big effing wait

Armada 2.0 would be solid, many parts of the game could use a partial readjustment to reflect Faqs and waves released after

At the moment, I am content in the belief that the content delay for Armada is more a result of FFG production capacity, and horrible public relations skills.

The "Something Big" comment was, I believe, intended to set an interest hook in the Armada community to help cover the long delay expected because of Legion & X-wing Ed 2 sucking up production capacity. There is also the chance that the Something big was a project that needed to be kept secret until Disney announced a new product (Clone Wars season 7).

The longer FFG waits to announce the "Something Big", the more impressive it needs to be.

Just my opinion, but...

A new wave would be nice. A huge ship (SSD)would be perfect! New factions would be amazing if we got Clone Wars ships, and meh if we got First Order. A new edition is hardly needed, at this point, but if it came with a cheaper core set, I could understand, but that is definitely at the bottom of my list.

Oh boy, if that’s your opinion prepare to be disappointed. Judging by the community here on the forum those two things are exactly the two most likely things to happen. (Though the new factions would more likely be prequel factions)

You are right. That would probably alienate a lot of players. Like me. I mean this would very much depend on the specifics, but I don’t want a rework of the game that takes any of the strategic depth and possible actions out of the game and I don’t see how you make the game quicker without compromising on either of those two points.

But I in general like really long board games. I recently played Scythe for the first time and apparently, I was the first player to ever complain that the game ended so quick. xD

I read this as "wall", thats been a long time coming too.

I'm still here at comic con if I may help in any way!

Honestly I think "something big" is/was just PR speak. I think when a ISD reprint (a good one, admittedly) didn't spark a good reaction, they simply doubled down.

Beyond that, I really don't want epic scale. I just don't feel like SSD or larger ships would fit the scale. And I'm not a big fan of $100 single box expansions (X Wing). I'd love to see more anti squadron stuff, especially for the Imperials.

I want an SSD. Don't care about scale, etc. I wants it. My preciooouussssss....

I also never understood people saying the game is too long. I've never had an issue getting in a full six turns in an hour and a half, usually an hour, no matter how many squadrons. Heck, I like playing 800 point games because they last longer and you have more ships! But then, I come from another background, where games could take a few hours or even weeks.... (Yep, warhammer, and I grew up with Avalon Hill. ) I LIKE long games. ?

But to each his own..lol. As I said.. SSD all the way.

I can see where you are coming from. While I do definitely want an SSD I absolutely hope that (If we get one) the SSD is not the only thing we get at Gencon. My guess is that an SSD would either come with a campaign or a new format like Epic in X-wing. But what the game needs is new ships for the standard Format.

WOW. I am playing since January this year with a couple of friends. We usually play tournament rules, meaning two hours and 15 minutes I belief and we rarely make it to turn 5 before the time runs out.

Analysis paralysis maybe? I fight hard against it in a lot of games where I have so many discrete options for what i can do.

I am betting new factions and a new core set

If we were to get an SSD you would have to do something for the Rebels as well you cant just do a one faction release after this long. I think other wise Rebel only players will leave the game. Their not going to buy a ship they don't want.

I don't know if Armada needs 2.0. So if not an SSD or new core set. Maybe a new campaign but with a new ship for each faction in it with new objectives, squadrons, obstacles (maybe nebula's)

A Terrain pack with asteroids and space stations in it. Actual 3D models?

So, I know there is a lot of talk about not really needing a second edition, and I agree. I think Armada is a well designed game, but I would like a legit rulebook, one that comes with the FAQ pre-written in, has all the current (and soon to be released) ships and stuff. It could help newer players as well. Additonally, in the future when "new edition"s need to come out its more like the editions of classic war games, just minor fixes, rather than sweeping changes.

I also think we are due to see the Clone Wars era stuff we havent seen yet. Maybe new objectives along with that? I think variety is the spice of life, so I am always down for new stuff if it doesnt mess the current stuff up.

I was SSD for a while, but now I’m gonna say Clone Wars, including a new core set.

I've been playing since original game release, always tourney rules, except occasionally more points. Even at a tourney, my games usually go the full six rounds and end before anyone else's. But I'm personally a lightning fast player; I always know exactly what I'm going to do next, and I execute at lightning speed...lol. But that's just me. I'm ok with the current tourney time frame.

I would like a rulebook kept online, like Legion does. That way they can keep it updated, and one can print as needed.

I miss that game. Way ahead of it's time. Poor support from HBS.

It is probably going to be either:

1. The Clone Wars, with the Republic and Separatist factions.

2. Armada 2.0.

3. Or both.

IMO they pushed the app support too far. They only needed to do what FFG is doing with X-Wing 2.0 and keep player looking at their minis instead of their apps.
