VT-49 RAC plus mini swarm ideas

By Ironcladmonkey3, in X-Wing Squad Lists

New player, have some ideas for an 100 pt RAC build.

-VT-49, RAC, ion torps, ruthlessness, fleet officer, tac jammer mod

- tie fighter, academy pilot

-tie fighter, academy pilot

-tie interceptor, alpha squadron pilot

Simple 100pts list.

Doing some tinkering and considering the vt49 and rac but with a pair of aggressors with some souped up turrets. I guess the theme i want to go with is the decimator (favorite ship of all time) and at least two escorts, at a minimum. Any input would be appreciated, I'm a total noob. Thanks in advance!

I like the concept!

I would really want to load RAC up for this, but to do so, he eats too many points and the swarm becomes less solid, which is why he often thus gets an ace wingmate.

I would suggest this:

RAC (DTF, Hux, IR, Title)

Howlrunner (Swarm Tactics, Multi-Spectral Camo)

2x Academy Pilots

Howlrunner's camo makes her hard to pin down, and RAC can soak some of her crits. She provides rerolls to all 3 others, while Hux provides focuses to all 3 ties.

First thing: an Alpha without any Autothrusters isn't worthwhile. I'd either add those (good advice for new players is to proxy upgrades... in one of my binders I've got a bunch of plain-paper pictures of the cards I printed off), or switch to another ship. Epsilon Squadron Pilot TIE/FOs with Advanced Optics are pretty solid for about the same price as an Alpha, or Epsilon Ace with Advanced Optics. However, I'm guessing from your post you don't have too many other ships, so I'd just upgrade the Alpha.

RAC needs a bit of work. Ion Torpedos, Fleet Officer, and Tactical Jammer are all somewhat weak upgrades. Ruthlessness is powerful against some lists, but often not super strong. Personally, I'd go with Predator instead, or Veteran Instincts. For RAC's other upgrades, I'd consider some combination of Engine Upgrade (incredibly powerful on large-base ships), Rebel Captive, Ysanne Isard, Gunner, and Dauntless. Clearly, they won't all fit in this squad, but they're good, basic* tools for future reference. Some examples:

  • Predator/Rebel Captive/Engine Upgrade. This is a great one for boosting a lot, since you'll have both offensive and defensive mods without actions. But if you don't need or want to boost, your actions are a bit lower value.
  • VI/Gunner/Engine Upgrade. This version will need to take some Target Locks for full damage, but being higher PS, it'll be easier to see whether you can safely take a TL, or if you need to boost.
  • Predator/Ysanne Isard/Engine Upgrade on Commander Kenkirk, or go Lone Wolf and Dauntless instead of Predator. A significantly tankier ship, but probably a bit lower damage than RAC.

* Someone like Kylo Ren or Director Krennic is also great on a Decimator, and an Ion Bomb can be a nasty surprise if well used, but a bit more involved.

Lots to think about here, thanks for your input! I'll print out some proxy cards and give these ideas a shot. I'm literally working with what I have so the proxy is a great idea.

Proxying cards is also a lot more fun when you have an actual "card" there. Just having a print-out of a list (or a list on a phone) doesn't feel quite as good, IMHO. Being able to pick it up, read it, hand it to an opponent makes the whole thing feel better.

Tactical Jammer only works if they're shooting the TIEs through RAC, which they probably aren't because A) you don't have the maneuverability to keep RAC between things, and B) if the opponent is any good at all, he'll be shooting RAC first (unless you do lots of ramming, in which case you may be better off using Oicunn).

Ruthlessness is far more likely to hurt you than to hurt your opponent unless you're absolutely sure your local environment runs lots of formations. Predator, Adaptability/Veteran Instincts, even Determination are likely better. (Maybe even Expert Handling, if you don't have the points for Engine Upgrade.)

Hux is probably better than Fleet Officer for this build.

Range 2-3 ordnance is tough to use with a big-base ship, especially one you don't want to joust with. I'd switch it to an Ion Bomb.
