Clone wars is BACK!

By Kraemet, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Oh the possibilities ... There's so much more material to use here than the new trilogy.

General Obi-Wan? Mace Windu? Asajj Ventress? Cad Bane? Young Ahsoka? Young Hondo (eh, he hasnt really changed that much)? Battle-ready yoda? Jango Fett?

Mandalorians! Geonosians! Clone troopers! Droids, oh so many droids?!

And all the various planets!

Only problem is, the Imperial player would probably have to become the Separatist player and none of the units from the current line would be compatible in the slightest, so... time for Imperial Assault 2.0 : Separatist Assault ? :D

Ok, so there are some problems there, but still... SO MUCH FREAKIN POTENTIAL

What a rollercoaster of emotions just washed over me :D

Are you kidding! :D I would LOVE to field battle droids and Droidekas! I was never a PT fan, but I would love a PT box! I guess Maul could make a re-/pre-appearance, and possibly even Darth Vader, Obi-Way, Grand Inquisitor, Greedo, Trawn & co (when ToL comes out), etc., etc.

Separatist Imp? BRING ON THE BOTS!!!! ...please? :)

I think the Imperial player would become the Republic as most troopers have earlier republic version and they controlled most of the galaxy then.

And the Rebels would continue spy and sabotage as Separatist heroes. There must have been times without thousands of droids to sacrifice.

Mercenaries would be even more interesting because they could help both sides.

I'm most excited that this means that we can maybe, possibly, fingers-crossed get an episode that confirms Cad Bane survives the Clone Wars and could therefore be a viable candidate for Imperial Assault...

Other than that, I'm not sure I'd necessarily want an entire Clone Wars edition of this game, but I could see something kinda inspired from this (spoiler for Rebels)

Maybe a merc heavy box with Rex as an ally, Cad Bane as a villain, Tarkin as a villain, and B1s, B2s, and droidekas as enemy units (among some stormtrooper variant too). Or maybe instead of the B2s, we could get something like a spider droid, for a Merc vehicle.

I don't think it would work with the current structure of IA, but it would be really cool if they released a second core set that was skirmish only and way cheaper that was clone wars themed and compatible with current IA skirmish. Maybe make it cost $40 like another extremely successful FFG's SW game's core set. And they could at least pre-prime their minis with the appropriate base-colors like some other companies are doing, it would go a long way to have white clone troopers, yellow battle droids, brown droideka etc even if there's no detailing on them, rather than just grey and beige blobs.

My bet is Legion is getting there, probably faster than IA will (if it ever goes there).

I agree though that if IA wants to explore the Clone Wars, it is likely to be through a second version of IA, which would probably mean that the current version would not be supported anymore, so no thanks ... at least not until we have seen Endor :)

Honestly, I'd be amazed if they decided to feature the Clone Wars via a small dungeon crawler like Imperial Assault instead of a larger tabletop game, but this is the same company that already chose the Galactic Civil War over the Clone Wars for their tabletop wargame anyway...

Yes, I think you're right about Legion, and I feel like that game should have featured the Clone Wars from the beginning, but FFG's president is known for having a pretty heavy OT bias when it comes to marketing Star Wars. That made sense 5 years ago, but now that many of the people buying these games were kids that grew up with the prequels and with the heavy backlash against the new movies (or TLJ at least), I feel like the prequel era is an untapped goldmine of Star Wars nostalgia for a lot of customers.

But yeah, I don't see IA touching prequel stuff unless they something similar to what X-Wing did when Force Awakens came out, new core set running parallel to the existing one.

If it goes there I think IA will take its time and go via rogue one and solo first.

Odd how some of you don't feel like the Clone Wars is campaign material. I for one think Clone Wars is brilliant campaign material - sure, there are large scale battles going on, but don't focus on the huge battles - the stories of the episodes always center around on a handful of characters on small-scale missions with large-scale impact, exactly the kind of thing IA campaign is structured around. If anything I'd drop Skirmish, because Jedi Master Anakin cutting through 50 droids is not someting IA skirmish is built for, while in campaign it could work. Skirmish wouldn't emulate CW battles anyway, it's a clash of small specialized forces by definition.

Rogue One's movie structure more or less already is a series of IA missions, so I wouldn't be surprised. But I'm not sure the breadth of content is there.

Solo however is the same timeline as Clone Wars, so while I suppose that would make one as likely as the other, I feel like Solo has NOTHING to do with the entire theme of Imperial Assault (small commandos on important missions for a larger cause), even though the structure would kind of work as well.

Solo is about 8 years after revenge of the sith and 7 years before the start of rebels, right in the middle. It does contain some ideas that could provide fodder for imperial assault. Other standalone movies (boba and obi one) should also be in a similar era.

The idea came to my mind that after the Solo movie, it is reasonable that Clone Wars storyline need to be completed.
We all know now who appeared in that movie.
So they need to tell the story how it happened.

Why Sidious let him go and how he ended up leading the Crimson Dawn.
Knowing that half of it was told in the comics and those were made from the CW scripts it is totaly make sense
So i realy hope we not only will see the Sige of Mandalore but the Nightsisters as well.
And than imagine Nightsister Rancor Riders in IA.... omg
I know it is dreaming but thinking about a CW era Starting Set with Camino and Dathomir map tiles or Asajj Ventress make my heart race not to mention the Clankers

I was huge opponent of introducing Darth Maul back in the timeline, but despite the dumbness of it, he has turned out to be one of the better villains out there. I wish Rebels' animation had been better, I don't know why they took away his raptor legs for just some plain looking ones, but the story of him trying to seduce Ezra to the dark side while using him to find Obi Wan was some of the better Rebels material. I too would like Filoni to bridge the two. I still hated that he was in Solo, because it was unnecessary fan service. I think it would be good to see him escape Palpatine's grasp once he has Darth Vader, maybe after Sidious is "captured" by the separatists. Speaking of that, the Samurai Jack cartoon dealt with Sidious' capture. I wonder if Filoni will do an episode that takes us right up to Revenge of the Sith. With Sidious away, Maul could have find a way to escape his grasp and fled to the outer rim to avoid him.

Personaly I love the concept in this Comic:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_Darth_Maul—Son_of_Dathomir

That Sidious let him escape intentionally and after he served his porpouse as a bait to lure out Mother Talsin he was left behind like a used tool without any significancy
