Advice request for rebel squadrons

By Crayon, in Star Wars: Armada Painting and Modification

Hello everyone, new player, started about a month ago now. I'd like to start by saying how much fun these little guys are. My mind is going over so many possibilities. So I need some help deciding. Currently I own the starter set and the rebels 1 squadrons, but I'll probably end up getting more.

So my decision is between painting the entire fleet of X wings one color, y wings another, etc. OR, should I paint each squadron a new color? I'm sort of leaning somewhere in the middle, two red squadrons, two blue squadrons, two green squadrons, two crimson squadrons, two yellow, two gold.

this brings me a new question, what's some color combos for them? Or should I open a bag of skittles? I like to think my painting skills can do a decent job at whatever I try to do, but that seems to come at the cost of imagination for coming up with what to do. Any help would be great

With Rebels, I prefer same style, different colors. The big thing for me is ease of identification of units on the table. Especially with a mix of aces in my list.

The other boon is that you don't get quite so burned out repeating the same paint job over and over.

I usually pick out 4 or 5 patterns per squadron type, and then just randomly pick 3 to do in the same color for each squadron stand.

I did each squadron with an identical base each with its own style of liveries, I did one as red squadron for Luke Skywalker and then the other ones had a consistent colour scheme among the 3 fighters on a squadron stand, to give of the effect of different, well, squadrons. What I want to do with a rebel fighters pack (once I find a place that stocks the **** things) I plan to paint a set of Y-Wings as gold squadron, another as a different squadron etc.

CC really crimped things for me.

I used to paint detailed markings of Reds 1-2-3 for Wedge, with red 2 on the Center peg, and 4-5-6 with Luke on the Center fir that one.... with less detailed more generic red squad for the rest of the Xs... but blasted Biggs has messed that formulae...

the rest of the time im as canon as possible with the names and unique, and go a little crazier with R&Vs

I'd just do your thing mano. Some people will remark on your canon/non-canon markings, but most are likely to look at those tiny things and be like 'wow, nice job!'.

Colors... basic primaries would be a good place to start, or go watch a new hope. Red, Blue, Green, and Gold (yellow). Or you could get completely creative and just do something gaudy like gold chrome on the whole mini. My exp here is that people will support you despite your (or my) choices, provide sage advice, and encouragement should you require. Best part about most paints is that if you don't like it, you can dip it in some cleaner and try again.

Dras, not to hijack his thread, but I remember reading somewhere that you (I think) pained on the bottoms of tubes to make clean circles for you Imperial "logo" for things like ships and TIEs... was that you? If so, what sort of thigns did you do that to? I tried to free hand it and while the circle is ok, it's off center and not a "Imperial" as I'd like it to be.

Just takes practice and a nice cleanly cut tube... which is the hardest part.

i haveva small assortment of plastruct abs tubes for the purpose in different diameters and thicknesses

Thanks guys. New question, how do I post photos here.

Also, kind of on the edge of off topic but not really, will we ever see things like K wings and U wings?

We'll probably get U-Wings but I doubt K-Wings will happen any time soon.

Most people use Photobucket, Imagr, or some other hosting site and then link the url in the text box and it should pull in the picture. I use an old Flickr account myself. Allows you to post high-res pictures without being limited to 500k
