Support of the X

By RafaelNN, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

What are peoples thougjts on the support of the x clan?

Ive been discussing with my local grouo and oppinions are divided. Some want the extra 8 influence for all clans. But some, me included, think it would be more interesting to see other effects.

For example support of the unicorn could be unbow one character per turn, or a support that gives you one more fate, etc (i dont know if those are balanced, they are just examples). I see the 8 influence of phoenix as they lending you their libraries and spells.

What do you guys think about that? 8 influence for everyone, or variety?

Depends if the best cards are role locked. One of the reasons to splash Unicorn is Talisman of the Sun. Its keeper only. However, there are other good cards in Unicorn that could make it worth while (Spyglass, Iuchi Wayfinder, Gaijin Customs, Captive Audience). Also, the added fate from Seeker is very real, as are the added bodies from Keeper.

It would've been cool if you could split the influence. So, say, Support of the Phoenix would give you 8 influence for Phoenix cards, but the rest of your influence from the stronghold could be from another clan. In short, dual splash.

I think what we are going to see is that the first clan packs will have the "support of role" that all do the same thing for each clan.

Maybe in the next cycle of clan packs we get a new kind of roll for each clan that does something different?

So, in 3 years? Cuz, one clan pack every roughly 6 months... ?

The biggest thing I want from the clan packs at this point is for them to come out faster and be done with a complete cycle of them. I hate the lopsidedness it creates in the interim even if they try and catch the other clans up in the following cycles. At the current release schedule we'll finish this cycle up in what? 4 years? AGOT 2.0 still has factions that have yet to receive their deluxe expansion and I think that's a bit problematic in L5R which prizes clan loyalty as a feature of the game. I'd be much more excited about something like a Seven Thunders box or a maho themed box. A box all about dueling centered around the Topaz Championship. A shugenja themed box dealing narratively with the elemental imbalance. Something like that.

To the OP's question I would prefer to see the same effect for each clan for symmetry. I like giving the option to splash more out of faction cards. It potentially widens the card pool rather than restricts it like the role locking does. Though I think Support Of The Phoenix is generally considered a weaker options for most clans considering the power of the role/element locked cards and effects.

With all the role lock cards FFG keeps adding to the game, I don't think support role will ever be playable, unless they improve them or add a support lock cards.

Well hopefully cards start coming out a little more often than this first year. But my wallet sure doesn't mind the slow pace at the moment.
I think support of should stay influence. Maybe a new round of roles called like "Student of" or something like that could each have a cool power like the op suggested (in reference to the old sensei cards). I like these alt roles a lot in theory.

In regards to the speed of release of the clan packs, I agree that at the cirrent rate its way too slow. I would have much preferred the 6 in 6 of tje imperial cycle to have been 7 in 7 with each clan pack. Everyone would be rewarded, amd there would be a nice card pool.

All clan roles giving the same influence is the easiest way, but also quite boring imo. It would be ok if we got a neutral role per pack or something, or one stronghold for each clan per cycle.

I think this might pick up the pace. At least I'm hoping it will. My prediction is that by the time the first clan packs for each clan have been released we see a Mantis clan and Shadowlands deluxe box. That brings the total to 9 factions and then we would see the following clan packs be released with 3 clans at a time.

Hopefully newer again gonna see shadowland faction as its own IMHO... one of the weaknesses of the original ccg.

i like this splash something from shadowland aproach much better!

I'm building Lion Support of the Scorpion atm. It's Jank, pure and simple.

Bottom line; Support needs to allow "no influence" splash. Like, Support of the X should say "you can include 3[or 4 idk] cards that have no printed influence values" I'd gladly set Seeker of Fire or Seeker of Earth on the bench if I could run 3x Kachiko and 1x Duty

I'm hoping you mistyped 'never'. I too hated Shadowlands/Spider and ne're again do wish to see them.

Doubtful, or expect to see all clans splash Way of the Crab / Way of the Dragon.

I'd love to see the extra influence AND allow the use of Way of for each clan, but I'm good with just the extra influence.

Way of the Dragon, yes.

Way of the Crab, not so much since your have to cram enough Crab characters in your conflict deck to meet the requirements and pull off a WotC.

Way of the Dragon is worse than Let Go/Tattooed Wanderer/Ancient Master. The only Way of that isn't locked to clans character and is really good is Way of the Scorpion.

And it, like all the others, has no Influence Cost so can't be splashed out of clan,.

Yeah, it was a though experiment innitiated by Foxtrot Four.

I'm not sure I would like to see Mantis / Shadowlands. We're already buying packs for only 2-3 cards (not counting locked ones...) for you clan with the odd splash card. Honestly it's already a downer to have to purchase these for so few cards. Luckily I paired up with 2-3 friends as to split the clans / charge.

If we go to 9 factions, we'll get 1-2 cards each pack instead. Unless they change the current format of card releases. I wouldn't mind paying 1.5x for 2x the cards in one bundle for example.

I suspect that new factions will come as deluxe expansions instead of clan packs. Deluxe expansions will probably be something like 55 cards with three of each card for $29.95 going by other card games. The core set dedicated 26 cards to each clan. I would guess probably around 30-35 to the expansion clan, 1 to a Role, a few neutrals and one card for each of the main clans. That might leave room for one expansion clan per cycle to get one card per pack without taking up too much space. Getting beyond 9 factions represented in cycle packs would be too cumbersome, I agree.

Though I'm hoping they do something more fun with deluxe expansions at first. Like a Shadowlands themed expansion that instead of a new faction gives a lot of cards for using or fighting against the Shadowlands, with a Role to represent the Shadowlands influencing a clan. I think it would also be fun to introduce new factions as Conflict (splash only) cards at first.

IIRC the rumor was (the same that said Phoenix pack first) a deluxe Shadowlands expansion introducing them as a faction would be soon.

We'll see!

What if Support role allowed using a few non-unique dynasty card from that clan? Say at most 5?

Not as a major faction, but it would be cool if you could choose Mantis or another minor-clan as your splash. :)
