Possible E-wing Droid?

By BCvalor, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I have been a huge fan of the E-wing since before the game even started. As such, I am still trying to find ways to fly it. After playing last night and realizing I didn't have a certain droid, I just picked R7-T1 and that lets you lock an enemy looking at you and then boost. Thought it was a sweet deal for jousting cuz you can lock and then get right in their face, or use it to run away.

what is the opinion on this card, and what else would it pair with? Does it suck or is it a match made in heaven?

Generally, R2-D2 is the droid of choice on an E-Wing given its hp. But R7-T1 would be my second option behind D2. Targeting Astromech has its use as does R2 Astromech if you're running PTL.

It REALLY depends on your pilot and wingmates. Corran generally flies with R2-D2, but you could make him budget with FAA

R7-T1 is an amazing droid on all ships. On paper. Three points gets you an Engine Upgrade and a stress-free Push the Limit. There's no doubt that's off the charts value, if you can use it. I've almost never been able to actually use it worth anything. The reality on table is that R7-T1 is really hard to trigger effectively. The Range 1-2, In Arc restriction is really, well, restrictive. By all means, put it on the table a little, get a bit of a feel for it yourself, but odds are it probably doesn't live up to your hopes.

What are the basic qualifications? I mean, i try to have three slightly well modified ships total, and budget E-wing is a plus, but your rec?

Thats too bad. Its so hard to get a meaningful E-wing as it is. I hope its drastically discounted in V2.

We know for a fact we can get 3 E-wings in 2.0 but how much room is left for upgrades is still up in the air.

You want 3 solid ships? Corran probably needs to go budget. If you want him fully loaded, then he's have one good wingmate, mayyyybe 1 cheap one

E-Wings look like they'll probably be more expensive in 2e, but they also look like they'll be worth their cost. They gain boost, a hull upgrade, a trait which is essentially Long Range Scanners (in an Edition when stacking modifiers looks like it'll be a lot harder), and an OK set of linked actions with Boost or Barrel Roll into Target Lock. Seeing as E-Wings will likely TL early, a linked TL is not necessarily as good as a linked Focus action, but it's still action efficiency. Add probably an R3 Astromech for double TLs, and perhaps the newly improved Proton Torpedos, or maybe just the changed* Fire Control System if they still have a System slot. I think the ships will be pretty solid.

* I can't call FCS nerfed on an E-Wing until costs are confirmed. The new version will allow you to reroll one die against a ship you have locked, rather than granting a TL after attacking. Due to this delay in gaining the action efficiency, it takes several attacks for the 1e FCS to be worth more than a 2e FCS. Consider: an E-Wing can set up their TL early, and won't have to spend an action taking it on the approach. If we presume either both focused or both unfocused attacks, two attacks with the 2e FCS (2.684 hits per attack on average focused, 1.938 unfocused) will do slightly more damage than two 1e attacks (2.25 and 2.813 focused, 1.5 and 2.25). This is pretty much just for the E-Wing, however, with their trait allowing long-range TLs.

You can do a really janky Corran with VI, R7-T1, Experimental Interface, plus whatever System you want (Advanced Sensors?). It's not as reliable as PTL Corran, but gets you out in a pinch and puts you at PS10. If you do joust with him, he'll get right in. More importantly, you can get right out of arc and still pick up your TL with a BR, R7-T1 and maybe keep a ship in arc.

I paired him with Norra in the ARC, which is... janky. I'm pretty sure I would always choose to put EI with R7-T1. Dutch Vander could use it, but he'll have a really hard time shedding the stress. Hobbie? IDK, I just got a chuckle out of this because I've tried this just for funsies.

Sounds like a fun list to try. Might use an A-wing with a missile with it?

The only effective place I've found for old R7-T1 is on a high ps ARC-170 because the dual firing arcs allow you to use it to boost on approach and on escape. Plus the abilities of Nora and Shara are target lock related so that part is complimentary as well.

My heavy version of Nora is a great low-mid hunter, with slugging hard on the opening and then getting consistent three dice while running. Although awesome fun when it works, it's dependent on interaction with enemy ships while being less forgiving than Artoo's regen and less consistently efficient than BB's ballet:

(42) ARC-170: •Norra Wexley (29)
•Experimental Interface (3)
Alliance Overhaul (0)
•Lone Wolf (2)
•Finn (5)
•R7-T1 (3)

A cheaper alternative that makes a decently light Nora with high ps repositioning and good action economy if you can stack up the focus:

(35) ARC-170: •Norra Wexley (29)
Alliance Overhaul (0)
Veteran Instincts (1)
•Rey (2)
•R7-T1 (3)
