Scouting the Battlefield
Cool, now they can move off the boat finally.
I hope this means that the next four expansions are really close. I had expected them in the stores by now.

Can they use their upgrade ability to just deploy at the stores instead of the distribuors and march into our homes? That would be nice. ?
Has anyone weighed in on what "after the first round" on the Seasoned Pathfinder upgrade card means? Could this be after any subsequent round? Or only directly after the first? Also, does the Scouts' free blue action after deployment apply to deployment with this upgrade card?
Edited by HepitudeReally good questions.
soneone could check the rules on an after trigger. Usually those are pretty exact which makes me think end of round-1. At which point you are probably getting really good position and flank without a need for a second or third round.
The second one is easy; the free blue is tied to the ability on the scout card, which is then circumvented and superceded by the Seasoned Pathfinder card.

The timing section of the rule book states that after means 'immediately after'. So it would be after the first round only. I agree with Vergilius on the free blue action.
This means that if the enemy occupies all terrain at the end of the first round then the scouts can't deploy and are automatically destroyed (26.2). Daqan could take capacity zero terrain to mitigate this.
So how about that Coiled Stance?

I like that it's actually cheap enough to be used in MSU-style Outland Scouts. Cheap enough that I'll give it a spin, at least. In MSU vs MSU it might just give them a significant edge.
Yeah coiled seems pretty solid. Cheap and always on, so as long as you're attacking or being attacked it adds value. Spearmen can't take it, which leaves Oathsworn, crossbows, and scouts. Crossbows probably can't use it very well and want rank discipline, but if you have nothing in mind for the other units it's quite solid.
Maybe Oathsworn with visored helms and this...
I think Coiled Stance is especially nice for charges. That is, if you charge successfully, your dial is revealed, so you gain Lethal 1*, but if you get charged first, well, at least you got Protected 1. It gets more tricky when you're engaged in combat, because if you attack first, you only get the Lethal, not the protected. Overall, a handy upgrade that is appropriately priced at 2 points.
*I just want to double check that I'm understanding it right that even on a successful charge, you're performing a melee attack, so Coiled Stance would activate, right?

Yeah. The wording of charge is that you move and collide and then perform a [Melee Icon]. So all abilities that trigger off of the melee icon trigger. You don’t just make some nebulous “attack” that gets shorted abilities.

It's also thematic - effective defence against chip damage from the small isolated units that the scouts should be infiltrating towards and engaging; but still will crumble quickly against a solid attack from a main force.
I'll also try it on cavalry - who have both a initiative 3 and 7 attack and therefore the ability to choose which benefit to take.
Edited by tall thin climberHeh. Anyone else chuckling at the thought of an all scout army?
Wait until your opponent has deployed their entire army and then deploy yours while getting a blue move on all of them?

That's solid. Ooh, I really like that! It allows them to dial in the hit modifier, with just a touch of defense while they wait. I originally thought of Spearmen for that, but I remembered that they don't have a Training slot. Good call on Oathsworn Cavalry.

See, this is where I sometimes wish this was just another Total War game (warhammer total war is just so great). In a computer game, I would totally do this. Alas this is a minis game where I'd have to pay to make that happen and houses and babies and cars really nerf the heck out of my ability to play silly lists like this.
The only issue I see with putting it on cavalry is that then you're not picking moment of inspiration or rank discipline (depending on the formation) and I just don't see myself doing that.

I can't find Seasoned Pathfinder upgrade. Am I doing something wrong?
I am going to take 2×2 scouts with Kari. Reform with Hawthornes to 1x4. Farm double surges, and if you get on flank plus moment of inspiration, and surge icon, that is 11 surges for 22 total damage within range 5 of a 1x4. Bring it ravos and aliana.
Well we know all the upgrades in the scouts pack now.

If you're farming surges, wouldn't you want to keep the formation a 2x2 for re-rolls?

It's all fun and games until you face an opponent with the same list and they get to be first player. Now you'll deploy everything* before they do. Ouch!
*You could mix it up by putting Seasoned Pathfinders on some of them so that they can at least deploy after round 1, assuming the other scout army had some units without Seasoned Pathfinders.

I think he literally meant what he said: 1x4, so 1 threat and 3 rerolls. That's some crazy shenangians! And it keeps Kari safe because they have to chew through 3 trays before they can target her. Without accuracies. @natertot , I endorse this plan!
