2.0 Rules PDF - losing your action?

By Woodspjb, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi all,

I just looked through the new rules pdf and I cannot see any mention that you lose your action if you are unable to perform it. However by the same token, the specific paragraphs from the old rules, that stipulated you could perform another action, are missing.

The target lock example states : "While the X-wing performs a target lock action, it measures range to all ships, then chooses a ship to lock onto. The player chooses the only TIE fighter in range and assigns it the “1” lock since the X-wing has the “1” ID token." But there is no mention if there is no target.

There is now no requirement to declare the specific direction for boost and barrel roll - just place the template.

For a boost - if one direction is blocked can you change direction or template to complete a boost?

For the barrel roll - if the left is blocked can you choose the right and vice versa?

I have not heard any chatter that there has been a change of heart - does anyone know the answers?

Cheers Paddy.

I fully expect this to be clarified properly in the rules reference, but the general rule suggested by Alex Davey at Euros is that there won't be any more 'fail an action choose another' stuff. You do the action, and if you can't do it, you're done.

Rules Reference will undoubtedly have more detail for finer rules points. Rulebook is just to get you up and running.

Yes, it was in the rule reference that it was written you could change action.

But as the TL action is more permissive now, I suspect the Boost and Barrel Roll may also be...

Isn't the general "gist" of this idea to put an end to things like checking for a target lock, getting the range, and then deciding to instead boost or barrel roll since you saw when checking for the lock you could get into range 1/arc/range 3 of some other shot without affecting an attack you'd like to make?

Yes.

It has been repeatedly stated that the result of doing an action and not being able to execute it will be 'welp sucks to be you moving on'.

But also, you can lock anything now, friendlies, enemies, obstacles, so locking is more forgiving in terms of how you can use it.

I wonder how chained actions will work, in terms of "failed actions." For example, Fang Fighters like Fenn Rau have a barrel roll or boost that can chain to focus... if you fail your chosen reposition action, is the entire chain broken, or can you still perform the red focus maneuver?

We will have to wait and see if the chain is broken...

As we have to wait and see if we really lose our action.

As with V1, this will be in the R.R.

Good question, no telling how it will be ruled, but personally I'd be fine with letting the chain continue because the action is still red. You tried to boost and it didn't work so that failed but you can still chain into a focus and takena stess. If you hadn't tried that boost you could have just focused with no stress. That seems fair to me.

I don’t have the reference in front of me but I thought I read somewhere that one of the devs said doing linked actions was optional after executing the starter move. Not what is being discussed but I get the feeling from that response that the first action must be completed to get the option to make the link. I side with if your first action fizzles you get no link.
