Targeting Coordinator + Redline.

By Cuz05, in X-Wing Rules Questions

And a whole bunch of other ingredients.

So. I'm struggling to get my head round this. I shall attempt to answer my own question. You can tell me how wrong I am :D

Captain Jonus + Systems Officer - Grants TL to Imperial Raider + Weapons Officer -TLs X1 and X2.

Redline, carrying 2 target locks on X2, hoves into view at R1 and says hi.

Raider - Targeting Coordinator- spends 1 energy to acquire a TL on X1 and apply it to Redline - Redline changes his 2 TL to X1.

That's where I'm getting lost...

1. Can Redline take that TL override?

2. Can the Raider actually acquire the TL it donates if it already has 2 TL or can it just polish an existing one?

3. Does it then have it's target lock action avalaible to replace the X1 TL and, say, acquire a TL on X3?

Ok. I've found I can't answer my own question(s).

I think the answer to 3 is probably common sense but my brain has given way at this point. I just don't exactly see why not but it all feels a bit iffy.

Rewinding all the way back, I believed Systems Officer works on huge ships as per normal because it's not an action. But... I don't remember why I believe that...

Can anyone illuminate me in a pleasingly simple way?

Apologies for lack of card text but that's a lot of extra mindbending on this end.

TIA.

There's a lot to unpack here, so let's go one at a time. First off, as stated, your squad includes:

  • Captain Jonus (or any other TIE Shuttle) with a Systems Officer
  • An Imperial Raider (or any huge ship, for that matter) with a Targeting Coordinator and Weapons Officer Engineer.
  • Redline

Let's look at the cards.

When your TIE Shuttle with Systems Officer performs a green maneuver, a nearby friendly ship can get that target lock. We'll say that Jonus gives the Raider acquires the free locks, and the Raider chooses targets X1 and X2. This step is all very straightforeward... and you'll soon see, it's actually irrelevant to the rest of the action. :)

Redline, who already has X2 double-locked, now comes into range. After that, in the epic ship movement phase, The Raider now gets to perform its maneuver & actions... notable is that there's a very specific order in which this happens:

  1. The Raider executes a maneuver
  2. The Raider gains Energy
  3. The Raider allocates Energy
  4. The Raider spends Energy
  5. The Raider performs Actions

So first, you move the Raider, and it gains energy. You distribute it as you see fit, then you may spend energy. Here is where you spend 1 energy with Targeting Coordinator, to first acquire a target lock (Weapons Engineer also allows you to gain a second lock). This has the effect of breaking the previous locks that Jonus gave it. It can then assign one of those new locks to Redline. When Redline gets that new lock, per the rules, its other locks are broken, and it doesn't get a second lock. This is because Redline is not acquiring the target lock, but instead is being assigned a target lock token. FINALLY, The Raider is given the option performing its actions, which could include a Target Lock action... which would give it two locks (thanks to the Weapons Engineer).

The main rules to consider: The normal rules for target locks only allow one lock per ship. When you get a new target lock, all of your old ones are broken. While you can REACQUIRE on the same ship, you still have to go through the motions to do so (be in range, etc). Since you're acquiring locks over and over again in this situation, it can get confusing... just treat every acquisition of a target lock as its own event, and make sure you're following the proper order of operations.

SHORT VERSION:

  1. There's no reason that Redline can't take the donated target lock.
  2. The Raider has to acquire a new lock as part of the activity that gives it away.
  3. It still has the option of performing a Target Lock action after doing so.

That's a great answer, thanks very much for all the cards also.

Clears up the lot for me. The Systems Officer is irrelevant, ofc! Assigned on Redline rather than acquistion.

Oh and the Engineer. Doh! Use it all the time. Slaps face .

Cheers!

Note that Jonus COULD always bypass the Raider entirely, and use his ability to allow Redline to acquire a target lock all on his own. Then, Redline gets to pick the target, and gets his double-lock as well. It doesn't work quite the same way that the Raider does (thanks to its massive base covering a ton of table space, and working at a longer range), but it's not a bad combo.

You might also want to look at Major Striden, as he has the ability to do a lot of what you're describing, at a longer range than usual (along with a few other upgrades that take advantage of his range-extending ability):

Thanks. Yeah, I'm a big fan of Stridans ability. Range to Redline was actually the situation when the above came into play and threw me off. The Raider could reach, Jonus couldn't and some arc dodging and Black One had occurred...
