Basing suggestions for universal terrain.

By Gun4hire, in Painting

Hello im looking for suggestions on how to base my rebels. I want to do a universal type terrain scheme that would not look out of place on dessert, forest, snowy, and urban terrain. I painted my imperials with just a black base but i feel like doing more with my rebels. Thank you for any suggestions or ideas ?

Go to Clear Bases I would think.

I wish i would have known they sold clear bases before i started but Ive already glued all the bases to the minis. So clear bases are not an option right now.

I had a look at the clear bases but based in the pictures I saw I didn't go for them. I feared they might be more shiney than transparent in daylight, and I also was afraid I'd get paint or glue on them.

My 40k miniatures from some time ago had a black-rimmed base with a sprinkle of little stone balls in different grays and black, looked pretty neutral to me (aka neither sand nor cobble nor concrete, simply rubble); might still look off in forest environments or sand.

Yeah i think i will base and for dessert, forest, and urban and just say oh well to snowy. Its hard to make a sceme that works on everything.

I painted the unaltered base a dark olive drab for rebels and a dark grey for empire. The minis look good on top, you can tell easily who is who, and they tend to visually blend into most terrains.

Best of all it's dead easy.

I use a very generic asphalt.

I lay down a layer of a grit base, like Astrogranite, Stirland Mud or something like that.

When it dires I give it a wash or two of a 2:1 Nuln Oil:Agrax Earthshade mix.

I use the mix so much I just keep a separate bottle of the concoction.

You can see it in my topic Permit Painting, it's on almost all of my miniatures.

I used a tan paint and washed it with some brown and green. It's very vanilla, but looks like something between sand and grass on the stock base. I started adding some rocks especially around feet where the glue or paint of the feet look less than 100%.

I went full on endor with mine. Looks amazing on forest tables and meh on everything else.

With many of my old 40k armies i did brown bases with some sand on top with a few small grey stones here and there. Looks pretty good on a shelf and most gaming tables, but nothing special.

I'm basing mind in mostly a yellow ochre paint fine grit stirred in. I'm making a battle mat with the same surface so everything will go together. My scatter terrain is currently desert themed, but (if we ever get ewoks) I'll do more hills and scatter that, though still based on the yellow ochre, will have a lot of greenery.
