Usaa anyone else unhappy with which creatures go with what clan?

By Taki, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

I can definitely get behind nezumi and crab. And tengu with crane. But the rest don't seem right to me.

The troll with Dragon? Zokus with scorpions instead of slaves to the lion? No sign of the kitsune?

What gives?

Do not like.

I suppose their idea was stick with the 5 ancient races plus nezumi and naga to give each clan one.. so the Lion will probably get the kitsu.

  • (Volcanic) Trolls live in the mountains. Dragons live in the mountains. (Volcanic Trolls) have an association with fire. Dragons have an association with fire. Checks out to me.
  • With Zokujin in Scorpion I had to immediately think of lizard people conspiracy theories. Fitting that the Scorpion is allied with them.
  • Ningyo are tied to the Phoenix through Ofushikai's history.

There were Kitsune allied with more than just Mantis in the old game, there were several Scorpion Kitsune cards. The real problem is people thinking that this is the old game, it is not. If FFG wants to changes things from the what the old game was (which they have in many ways, they have also kept many things) then people need to accept it as the current story. I get it, nostalgia is a powerful force, but far too many times have I read comments on peoples dislike of the L5R LCG because they changed something from the L5R the CCG.

Well we now have confirmation that Hotaru is married to a Fox Clan samurai, so who knows what/where/how kitsune and/or Fox Clan loyalties will play out in new5r. It's a brave new world...

The ramblings of someone that doesn't know how to take a joke.

  1. FFG does indeed own L5R. They can do whatever they want with it. The idiotic inflation of Scorpion power cards is a testament to this.
  2. There were a few (4, I believe) kitsune in Scorpion in the old game (including Bayushi Misaki, a jaw dropping piece of Art). Mantis had more. More individual Kitsune, an entire Family, and a Forest they helped save. In the Old game.
  3. Plenty of old Mantis and Spider/Shadowlands players want to be invested in this game. FFG Tossing out a handful cards (so far) is a start. But they need to do more if they want those players to come back to the game. I have seen far too often from fans of the seven'Great' Clans the attitude of "Screw you, I got mine".

I 100 % agree that Scorpion are getting way too many immediately playable cards in the cycles and soon to be clan pack while others are struggling to keep up competitively. I really enjoy the art work from the old game and hope they continue using it in the future (Especially the kitsune cards). FFG are in a weird place for their target audience with the game, they have many of the old fans of the CCG playing and they have a new generation of L5R people who's first experience is the LCG version and having to appease both is going to be difficult. I would love to see more Mantis cards as well as a boat load more Shadowlands as well. I apologize if I appeared to be humorless with my comment as I agree with all of your statements, reading posts saying CCG L5R story was this way and so on and so forth has clearly taken its toll on my mind. I hope to have further discussions with you!

On of the things you have to remember is that Mantis are always the butt of you don't belong jokes from the other clans in the old game and have had to live through having our clan eliminated 3 times (during the transition from Wizards to AEG where we we didn't make the cut during the first faction culling and were eventually brought back mid cycle, than again when they were transitioning to the Obsidian Empire arc and despite apparently being one of the principle powers in the colonies, and lastly when the game transitioned over to FFG) and when we are brought back to be playable, we were normally left on the back foot in terms of playable decks for key chunks of those arcs while the missing card pool that being left out of the core set meant we didn't have.

Add that every time we seemed to see story traction it was met with the rest of the clans complaining about how Mary Sue we were treated and not deserving of what we got (Yoritomo attaining Kami status) and the ridiculousness like the $1,000 bounty offered by the Crane to the winner of the last AEG Gencon to use the story prize to negate the work that the Mantis players had put into legitimizing our place as one of the great clans by having Yoritomo ripped from his place in the celestial court.

There is good reason why we as the loyal fans of the faction get triggered by others trying to downplay our position in the game.

For sure, the $1000 bounty thing showed just how awful the community itself was towards the Mantis clan. I think FFG will be more aware of those types of community interactions and hopefully prevent that kind of thing from happening again. I would love to see more Mantis cards as the ones we have seen so far are just awesome! I hope they do get their Great Clan status back some day as another full playable clan would be awesome!

The Mantis Great Clan had more, because the Mantis Minor Clan had allied with and absorbed a number of other Minor Clans, including the Kitsune. In the current timeline it would make very little sense for the Mantis to get a Kitsune. Not that it makes any sense for the Scorpion to get a Zokujin...

I came across a lot stronger than I meant too. ?

To be fair to Issac (The last Gencon winner of the CCG and the First Mantis winner of Gencon), his car broke down on the way to Gencon. So the bounty turned out to be a really good thing for him. The Mantis community as a whole understands this and no one holds it against him for taking the money.

This just shows that you don't understand us. The Mantis Great Clan was a grand alliance. Take away the Moshi, Tsuruchi, or Kitsune, and the whole suffers. All four Families were important. Just because the AEG story team was **** at understand this.... well, let's face it the AEG ST was **** at telling any Mantis stories (notable exception: the Sparrow Restoration).

The Fox and Wasp can join us when the Crane (predictably) fail them. It just needs to be better written this time so folks understand that it is a team, not a dictatorship.

As far as the Zokujin go, it makes more sense for them to be allied with the Scorpion than the Lion. I'm not going to say that the Lion are horribly racist, as we have not seen that in a story yet. But the Scorpion territories run along the southern middle part of the Spine of the World mountain range. Shiro no Soshi is in those mountains. Lion only lightly touch mountains with their lands.

Oh I hold no fault with him at all as frankly passing up that bounty would have been insane, even without the excuse of his car. I lay the blame wholly with the parties who ponied up the cash to place the bounty in the first place.

I just like to think of it as we are getting the Crane to pay back the bounty money they owe our clan now.

Does anyone else remember the April Fools joke that AEG pulled a few years back, before the release of Emperor Edition?

Long story short, the big selling point of EE was that the starter decks would have four themed strongholds out of the box, and each clan was to get full support for each of the four themes. Each week leading up to the release of EE, a new theme for one of the clans was spoiled/revealed on the main site.

Come the week of April 1st, the Dragon clan got the theme they had never known they had always wanted... Zokujin who practiced the unique style of swordsmanship... N'tn.

The N'Tn Swrdmstrs was one of the best gags I think AEG has ever done.

The only thing I'm scratching my head about is that 3 political on the Dragon Clan troll. I think he should be wearing tiny little round glasses and reading the Tao of Shinsei in his card art if he is more politically adept than most other members of the clan. Unless of course... he went to the Hida Courtier School. ::DRAGON SMASH!::

I can see that point being made for the Wasp and Centipede, but absolutely not the Fox. The Fox never wanted to join the Mantis, that was a big part of the Yoritomo's Alliance/Mantis Clan storyline. They were shoehorned in as the result of a Temptation during the Race, and it erased a big part of what the Fox were about.

Although by the same token they were separated from the Alliance in the first place due to a story team fiat versus the interests of the players.

Not really. The majority of Fox players were staunchly anti-Mantis.

You and I must be remembering very different environments as most of them in the groups I was a member in were actually fine with the Alliance when we transitioned.

Unhappy? You bet yer Fu Lenging Ashigaru I'm unhappy. Why every clan didn't get and Oni doesn't make any sense at all, if you ask me.

As soon as I saw you posted in this thread, I knew what your post was going to be.
Don't ever change. :)

The only way I'll change is if Fu Leng sees fit to give me another Oni arm, so that I may serve him better

Kakita: "One blade, one strike"

Mirumoto: "Two hands"

Me: "4 hands with blacked claws, the severed leg or your sensei, and an infinite supply of rage"

Oni math ftw

But they did...every clan got Marauding Oni. ;)

But if 1 oni is good, 7 oni would be 7 times as good, right?
