Scum and Villainy 75: 303 Squadron

By Kelvan, in X-Wing

Kelvan, Sable, and Scruffy spend about 20 min on 2nd Edition, a half hour on The Last Jedi/Harassment of Kelly Marie Tran, and a half hour finally letting Scruffy talk about World War 2.

https://scumvillainy.podbean.com/e/episode-75-303-squadron/

I now know I want Scruffy to talk about World War 2 all the time.

As always thanks to our producers.

I for one enjoyed the episode

Thanks! I had a lot of fun on this one.

I'm finding I really enjoy these more philosophical discussions about the Star Wars Universe, they let me see additional depth to the stories I've loved since I was a kid.

Also, will always listen to cool dogfighting stories from WW2.

I've posted this elsewhere on facebook but I found this after recording the episode and found it to be fascinating.

A WWII podcast with a Star Wars intro is fine, periodically.

Next up on Scum and Villainy: Is Star Wars X-Wing better represented by the movie Dambusters or 633 Squadron?

(Can't find things to talk about? The last couple Mynock casts have been line 2 1/2 - 3 hours each. We can't shut them up!)

This was by far the worst episode of Scum & Villainy. Making statements like those that dislike TLJ are misogynist is a clear indicator of the immaturity of one of the podcast hosts. You are free to like the movie or dislike it. The only reason to start name calling is to use the tactic created by Disney in order to attempt to blame the audience for the obvious failure of the movie and the obvious failure of the Disney Star Wars movies to come (solo is an epic failure).

I hope Sable comes around more when 2nd hits in full.

That was plainly not what he said.

I didn't like TLJ, and it has nothing to do with misogyny. My biggest issues are that the pacing was terrible, all the characters are idiots, and absolutely nothing has changed from the start of the film to the end. Rey and Kylo were the only interesting parts, and it was a huge missed opportunity to not have them join up at the end. Rey and Kylo trying to figure everything out and make their own way in the galaxy could have been an interesting film, instead we're going to get more stupid Rose + Finn nonsense instead.

Also, Solo might have been a box office failure, but it was more fun and enjoyable than TLJ, which is largely responsible for Solo's failure.

That's a really good read. I certainly appreciate how smart TLJ is compared to how smart it had to be, but I still left TLJ feeling like the execution fell flat in a number of places, undercutting the emotional weight.

What is the name of the WWII Podcast? That is one of my fathers favorite times in history.

Alright, who is the guy holding the white lightsaber?

Good read; thanks for sharing.

I don't agree with all of it; while I mostly had fun watching the movie I was disappointed by many parts of it -- so much so that it's the first Star Wars movie I haven't run out to buy the DVD of as soon as it was available. Great characters, largely, I think let down mostly by editing, distracting universe-jarring elements (Mary Poppins Leia, the lightspeed torpedo, cell phone joke, etc) and some elements that could have been much stronger (I hate the Finn-Rose side story. I love them both as characters and think they are great together; I just think they could have used a story that fit better into the overall narrative while exploring Finn's issues more deeply). While I wouldn't have chosen to do Luke quite the way they did, I can certainly acknowledge it as a particular vision -- and think the three-way relationship with Rey-Kylo-Luke was done particularly well.

I liked Solo; I'm certainly looking forward to Episode IX so that I can judge the sequel trilogy once complete.

Perhaps TLJ is a victim of expectations. ESB is my favorite Star Wars movie and I certainly went into TLJ with high expectations even after seeing the weaknesses of TFA.

Its another clear hit piece of the Disney/Lucas Film anti-fan propaganda. Disney Star Wars movies are now starting to lose money and instead of accepting the reality that Disney has produced bad movies that aren't selling to their expectations, they instead have created a campaign to blame the audience. I think this type of marketing/propaganda will end star wars movies for at least a few years.

Here is a much better article on this topic: https://www.flickeringmyth.com/2018/07/the-most-disappointing-blaming-star-wars-fans-for-disneys-failures/

This is utterly ridiculous, this is a bunch of misogynistic cry babies that want everything white and male, and straight to full-fill their personal power fantasies instead of trying to get a good story.
Star wars is always always been about fighting against oppression and excluding. And now those people who were raised on the morality of fighting exclusion are now trying to exclude others. That is what this is and all this is.

Kelvan, I (Almost) Completely agree with you about TLJ. There are a couple points I disagree with you on, Including Luke's Story, because I liked it a lot. That said, having a new teacher would be interesting. Also, not my job to convince you about TLJ, and no one's job to convince me.

I like TLJ a great deal. I think Mark Hamill nailed it. That being said, by using Luke, Leia, and Han as fundamentally different characters, it does change what you're supposed to take from them.

Luke's message has a lot more to teach about failure than it did before, and that does change your perspective of him after Return of the Jedi.

I love your last sentence. The convincing other people to like/dislike the movie is so weird to me.

That's my general take. I like that they even tried to go for a good film instead of a watch and forget. It didn't always land, but it did enough times for me to watch it.

Considering he's been on more in the last 4-5 episodes than he had in 2 years I think that's the case. I agree, Sable is the freaking man.
