Freedom Never Smelled So Sweet: Steel Squadron Containment Thread for July!

By Truthiness, in Star Wars: Armada

Great read as always.

Probably the odd man out when I say I've loved Sato from the start.

No.

Just puts you in the same category as ME.

And do you really want that?

Really?

I mean, it sounds like a promotion to me! lol

I'd never quite connected why theflak machine worked so well with Sato before, its because to "kill" the enemy flotillas Sato had to kill the squads. He couldnt score highly without decimating the enemy squadron wing, and wasnt willing to bring lots of squads to help with that. Truthi identifies the change quite well.

Did either of you get top 10 at nationals last year with Sato....?

You know, fine, I’ll damb well shut up then.

That's a really great Sato Article Truthi!

That was unnecessary. Dras was already self-depreciating. Was the insult with added elitism really necessary? We got it Gink, you're good at this game. Good for you.

Having a bad week. Sorry guys

Can’t wait for @Truthiness doing his write up on driving over an hour to a store championship just to face me again instead of one of the many new people for the final match ? (and us beating on each other so hard that someone from table 2 won the thing).

You left out that I played one of the people I drove with in round one, and another fellow CC campaign member in round two.

I wasn’t going to rub it in. ?

As we wait on GENCON, here's friendly reminder that this game itself is in a pretty awesome place.

Love this.

I hope a squadronless fleet does win NOVA or Gencon. I find it to be a really exciting way to play.

Nice Article, I have begun to enjoy going squadronless on occasion. In fact my theories on squads have changed, I think going half way on squads just doesn't work. Seems like your Sato list is doing well but my theroy is you either go all out on Squads or just forget it. Light squads to try and slow down a full squad wing feel like waisted points to me. Your better off with another activation and charging down their carrier(s).

I would agree with that assessment. I dropped squads anywhere I was going squad light because they were just dying for no return on investment. I put the same amount of points into a Slicer flotilla and haven't looked back. Sato is the only place I go medium. It works because Sato squads work in a fundamentally different way from the normal squadron dynamic. Their goal is just to live, not kill. As such, you pull other squadrons away from your ships not because you're tying anything down, but because your mere existence is a major threat. They'll come after you even when you're obstructed, which is a very good thing.

Yup. I've been playing a ton of squadless recently, but rogues are coming back with a vengeance.

At the last two regular monthly store tournaments I went to there were two fleets with 8 YT2400s each. And at the last two store champs I went to there was at least one fleet with 7 YTs + Jan.

Squadless is a lot of fun imo because you're focused entirely on ship maneuvering (which I personally feel is the biggest strength of this game) and positioning better than your opponent makes such a huge difference. I enjoy it a lot, but oh man if you run into max rogues it can be a tough match! I got utterly hosed my last few games against max rogue balls.

Rogue Squads gets you the best of both worlds - bullying on all the squadronless fleets (and immunity to their slicer tech), but you still out-ship the Sloane lists.

Shara and Tycho still gives me troubles with a rogue heavy list in a way that slicers just couldn’t. I can see dropping the light screen against Sloane aces, but against my Imperial Rogues or against YT24000s, I would think that they would be hugely valuable. Are you hitting lots of Sloane lists and squadronless lists?

I've been getting a mix of everything. Rogues are a challenge, for sure, but when I go squadronless, I'm going absurdly fast. Decimators and YTs have a hard time keeping up with CR90ETs.

I have to say, the times I've gone squamando (hope that catches on....lol) with my 5 activation dual jerry ISD's, playing against squad heavy never really affected me. By the time they peppered me for one rnd, the BTAvenger obliterated the carrier and flew away. And now I see so many fleets in our meta that take nothing but screen squads that squamando (seriously, that's hilarious) is almost too hard to pass up. That extra combat ship activation is worth its weight in gold.
