Armada is Dead should die.

By BrobaFett, in Star Wars: Armada

And all I really needed was a teaser, maybe a hint, a picture of part of a midel, a tease card, an apologu for Hyperfake or even a "We didnt forget about Armada, been busy with X2.0 and Legion"

but nada. 0. nothing.

If you have been around the forums you know the joking cries of "Armada is Dead" is just that, a joke. It's been around for just about as long as I've been on the forums. We joke that Armada is Dead because we love it, ironically, and despite the fact that we have always been somewhat of a redhead stepchild we have had such an alive community that the lack of support, articles, product, or whatever else got thrown our way just didn't matter all that much. To an outsider, or someone looking at FFG's participation bar graph, we might seem small- but the reality was that for a wargaming community we are incredibly active all across the world. Not in every city, but for most people across the world a game of Armada was way more practical to find than many of the other dozens of smaller/rarer war games.

Problem is, the joke isn't funny any more. We have been without new product for long enough that now every other time someone says Armada is Dead they aren't really joking. And worse, the fact that it can thinly veil as a joke gives a pass to people who aren't joking to post it as clickbait for their negativity. I can't particularly blame people for being upset. Or for venting on the primary conversation pit for this game about their frustration. But a community can't run on salt. And if Armada got by because of it's community before, then we can't particularly afford to lose that now- even as people who care(d) deeply about the game have already stepped away entirely or cut back on participation here because of the rampant and unavoidable negativity.

I want to suggest, that for the time being, we stop with the Armada is dead jokes. We stop saying Armada is Dead seriously too, and trying to disguise it as a joke. I think it's time we be real, and if we want to talk about the situation we are in, what it means for the future of the game, whatever, to do it without resorting to a dated and not-funny-anymore cliche. I don't want to downplay the frustration because I am there with many of you. But we do need to remember that this forum is oftentimes the first place someone interested in the game looks to check out what the community is like. If all they are clickbait rageposts then what does that say about us? What does it say to the new guy we want to get to try the game out?

I'm a dude on the internet, you don't need to listen to me. But I'm done with Armada is Dead and I hope some of you will agree.

It was funny enoguh I actually logged in, so I could like this post :D

At best, even with an announcement at GenCon - it will be months before the expansion/product is in hand and on the table.

FFG is large and I am sure that X-Wing and Legion are huge time sinks right now.

Read the comment about FFG perhaps being afraid to add items and breaking the system...which is effectively why we are getting X-Wing 2.0 - huge re-balancing. Not an issue.

Armada has always been slower with releases, the trade off is that they have been balanced. I have no issue with slow so long as the game remains as good as what I have experienced so far. Which isn't much, but has me excited enough to buy more of what is out there.

Give me quality over quantity every time....releases will come to the patient!

A game that has players playing games and making stuff for it is not dead.

Even Battlefield 1942 and 2142 still have players, they are simply no longer supported

no longer supported =/= dead.

armada is certainly not dead.

I miss you a ton GK.

Armada is not dead, but FFGs lack of engagement with a community that wants it is infuriating. It's almost like these two things aren't mutually exclusive.

I hate the "Armada is dead" crap. It dilutes the clarity of the messages that come from those of us who are reasonable and aren't so shrill.

It does for all intents and purposes.

I've already moved on to legion for my star wars fix. I can't even remember my last game of Armada. Also, any money saved for their "something big", has gone to 40K Tzeentch.

If the requirement to be dead is you stopping from play ot I would have been prefer you never played actually.

It seems we have someone to blame, finally. ?

Wish it was that easy, and if it helps I'll accept the blame. I've never brought down an entire game before!

But when a game no longer has industry support, it dies. As a community, it may still see play, even new rules/models, that just means the community is alive, the game however is still dead. Example, right now a star destroyer is ~$50? What would it cost for an unpainted 3D printed equal, with stand, tokens, and cards? $100? $150? more? (I know, star destroyers will live on cheaper through eBay and the like, but new ships won't have that luxury). At those prices it's not likely Armada will see many new players, or old for that matter.

I do however wish the community a long and successful life long after Armada has died.

Well, I do miss you guys too, but things got a bit too stale for my tastes...

I'm sure I'll stop by if we get some new content, but for the time being I'm busy with other games :D

I dunno GK... looks a bit dangerous for my tastes..

Gencon is often a platform for big announcements. It is right around the corner. I wouldn’t expect to hear anything new till then. Unfortunately, that would probably be for an end of the year release. I recongnuze that some people like releases a little faster. it is probably a little slow right now, but not by much. I personally prefer a stable meta to test things out due at least six months before the next wave chsbfes things. 9 doesn’t bother me.

As for games that stay alive, I’ve still got a few thst I play well last the end of new content. It is all about what you want to get out of the game.

I'm sorry to say that but I bet we wouldn't see anything for Armada on Gen Con. It'll be X-Wing 2 general premiere. I'd say that if FFG has something to show us it wouldn't happen until october or november.

Perfect.

Looking forwards to it ?

Thankfully I have legion which has plenty of releases. I’m becoming less and less interested in armada, the longer this drought lasts. I’ll keep my armada stuff and dig it out from time to time and play but with the exciting release schedule of Legion, it’s becoming less and less often. Still really hoping to get the ssd and dhornean gunships for armada though. It’d feel like a complete game to me if those ships get released. I’ll always love armada and can’t see myself selling it, just hard to stay excited without new content.

I had planned on diving in fully with Legion but beyond the core and the initial releases I haven't. In large part the lack of support for Armada has soured me on making the investment. It seems to be great now, and the game is fun, but are they gonna keep supporting it long term or relegate it to obscurity whenever their next new hotness comes along? Couple that with the disappointment from the most recent two Star Wars movies and the seeming general direction of a beloved franchise and I haven't been willing to get into it.

No news for Armada at Gen Con = more dead threads coming this way

Or, we could just communally wear our big boy panties the weekend of Gencon and not act like our heart and soul is on the line if we don't hear anything.

Cause it's not.

Trust me, there is NO ONE out there that wants new Armada toys more than me. I want them bad, and I want them now. I am mad that we don't get news. I am sad that we get so shafted. I think FFG has failed the communities of it's games in a significant way by being so standoffish. But yet, I still love Armada, still play Armada, and at this point, FFG can't TAKE that away from me. I am a member of the community that will keep playing Armada for a long time. My kids will play Armada as they colonize Mars :D

So don't worry about it, either way.

My core group of gaming friends and I are starting Gloomhaven tomorrow night. Hopefully by the time I come up for air real Armada news will be available.

If news happens at GenCon, cool. If not, yes I will be disappointed. I'm not going to take my ball and go home, and I'm not going to declare that the sky is falling, but I'll still be bummed, because I'm an adult who knows what to do with my negative feelings.

I still poke FFG occasionally on Twitter and Facebook, though.

He he he, sex joke - or at least it would be if I didn't specify "negative" feelings.

Speak for yourself. I apparently made some very bad wagers with a certain underworld figure.
