OK, I understand that most people think, that Palpatine doesn't belong on a battlefield. I think it was inevitable that FFG releases him sooner or later. My guess would have been later, but still it was inevitable.
Actually, does he bring anything to the battlefield, that let's you spend 210 points plus upgrades on him? I think, that's his real problem. He seems to be underpowered ...

I for one can't understand the reason why Emperor Palpatine needs to be in the game at all. The Emperor is a puppet master, not a soldier or a field general. He plots and schemes and should be kept as the "evil" shadow that looms over everything in the Star Wars universe. So where do we go from here? What will FFG come out with now to even give the rebellion a fighting chance against such powerful imperial forces? It is my hope that this doesn't lead to all the "fun" being drained out of the game in a race to see who has the latest and more powerful units on the table. I have seen this happen to Warhammer 40k, another game that I used to like to play before it became lost in the power creep of each new codex. I hope that this won't happen to this fine game, but I have been around the wargaming community long enough to have serious doubts that this won't happen to Legion.

I mean, I can't help but wildly disagree with this comment, as well as other similar comments in this thread.
First, for the thematic complaints about the Emperor on the Battlefield. My immediate response is to echo a previous poster - this is first and foremost a tabletop army game drawing from established Star Wars characters. While thematic battles are exciting, the biggest thing FFG is trying to do is provide a host of Army-Building options for the various factions and allow people choice of how they want to play. Palp is a different type of character, who looks cool, and adds something different to an army. Have FUN with him in the game - your tabletop battles aren't canon. With that out of the way though, the claims that he thematically doesn't fit simply ignore everything in Star Wars canon outside the movies. We literally have examples in Novels (Lords of the Sith), Television Shows (Clone Wars, Rebels) Video Games (Battlefront and Battlefront 2 where he is a playable character in ground assault), and Comics (Darth Vader) where we see Palpatine getting into trouble, including combat and lightsaber battles and force lightning attacks. Everyone in this thread is right if we look solely at Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. However Star Wars is far more than that.
As for power creep, valid concern but I don't see Palpatine causing that. Right now activations are huge, and Palpatine looks to be the most limiting Commander the Imperials have in this regard. It will be interesting to see lists with him, but I don't think he is going to be an unstoppable force like some are predicting. Further, we have 800 points... we will always be limited and have to make tough choices, which is how it should be.

I don't really see how Palpatine is too powerful. 210 points plus probably another 20-40 for upgrades is pretty brutal. Especially because he's moving at speed 1. His Pulling the Strings ability is pretty nice but if you want to use it he's probably not gonna see combat that often.
His command cards are okay I guess. For his 1 pip he needs to get in range of multiple units to really make use of it, while the 3 pip is not that great in my opinion. I find that most of the time 3 orders are enough to give me full control of all my units.
I have to respectfully disagree with some of your comments, but it's nice to be able to calmly talk about this subject. Thank you for that. I guess time will tell and I truly hope that I am wrong about this.

Hey man, zero issue! What are your reasons for thinking Palp is contributing to power creep, specifically? I'm more than often wrong, just ask my fiance.

It's really not saying much...it starts with tracking ships through hyperspace, which movie canon says is impossible, continues with a super cliché spineless moff or whatever his position is, and has Vader pulling off acrobatic back flips, at which point I stopped reading. Very poorly written.

Palp does not show fear, he feints it. Every instance he seemed to be losing he feinted to get the upper hand. Why doesnt he have a Courage of 2, but if he Panics he actually causes something really, really bad to happen instead of Panicing?
Also i love RWM, but FFG kinda killed it by ignoring it halfway through its "release"
They gave us 3.2 factions (Elves and Ulthuk exist but didnt really get anything outside the core stuff yet) and then complete radio silence for like 6-8 months or something. Most of my local players wanted to play elves or uthuk and because of this it pissed them off and they quit.
And i dont play RWM now because i cant play it alone.

I particularly like the command card ‘An Entire Legion’ giving you the flexibility over your entire army. I don’t know if it is better than Master of Evil in terms of effects but it does give you the ability to react to different parts of the battlefield.
I also like the crit surges on Palpatine, gives him a powerful punch against units in cover or even armour. Add this to his special ability allowing other units to attack or move for free, makes him deadly (double tapping with bikes for example).
I am afraid he cannot doubletap vehicles.
But i agree. Pretty strong dude. Especially if he is 210 instead of 270. Cannot see which number is on the card

Well dark side force users draw power from negative emotions such as fear. So maybe Palpatine embraces fear to become more powerful?
But from a gameplay perspective a courage value of 2 would be not so great for all the troopers around Palpatine. And even if he had an ability that triggers when he panics the enemy just would not shoot him when he already has 3 suppression tokens making the ability rather pointless. Not to mention that he could loose actions pretty often which is also not so great considering he only has a speed 1 move.
Though I'm not an Imperial player, I'm quite looking forward to Vader and a handful of 501st veterans taking on Palpatine and his guard. I find it hard keeping track of what is canon but I remember reading somewhere about how Vader's offer to Luke was genuine and he intended to turn on the emperor. I think it's implied across a lot of the comics/games that betrayal, one way or another, was always on the cards so while it's a what-if scenario it is at least a likely one.
If we get a future mission where assassination of the enemy commander is an objective, so much the better.

IIRC correctly that was in one of the Shadows of the Empire spinoffs, or even the novel itself?

Unfortunately that would end up meaning it’s not canon.
The way I see it, FFG isn't doing anything classic battlefront didn't do. It won't make sense for palp to be in every mission combination, but we already have that problem with some objectives. He's a big character, and the license has never shied away from him blasting fools on the battlefield.
Also I saw on reddit that Team Covenant said Palp is 240 points, though I haven't double-checked that.
its hard to read imo, i couldnt tell if it was 210 or 240.
But looking at his abilities/power, im leaning towards 210. He's only marginally stronger than Vader, since his individual attack is weaker but his rules are stronger.
After all i imagine getting cleaved by a lightsaber would hurt far more than being zapped. Main difference of course being getting zapped isnt melee.

Not to pick on you, but this is one of my internet pet peeves. The fact that 5-6 people posted this here does not tell us “most” people feel this way. It’s not even most of the people posting here and it’s certainly not a scientific survey of Legion players.

I think it was the original novelisation back in the day.
That said, in the only Darth Vader comic I've read from the new canon Vader's found out about Luke so he knows the emperor lied to him. I expect he'd find that revelation annoying.

iirc all he said was "you killed her" referring to padme. Never said anything about losing the baby (which he didnt know was twins at the time).
