Reporting in from Endor!

By Desslok, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm currently driving north California along the Avenue of the Giants - the heart of Redwood Territory. To sum up, I've been walking around all day in this:

I don't care how badassed your Biker Scout helmet HUD is, this is going to be a huge fist full of black dice when you are zipping through on a crotch rocket at 300 miles an hour.

"Sorry commander, we can only patrol along the nature paths and hiking trails!"

That's beautiful. My brain isn't comprehending size without scale reference, but it's beautiful.

What I love most about that Jedi chase scene — and there's so much to love, from steadycam pioneering to the pinnacle of Ben Burtt to OS Lucasfilm storyboarding — is the absence of music. Like my other favorite action scene of all time, the fight in Marion's Nepal bar.

The Empire is more or less ****** in vehicle design and deployment.

Big open icy plain? Deploy some tall slow moving vehicles that walk and can be targeted and shot at repeatedly and attacked by fast movers before they arrive at their target location. Fast moving vehicles that would cover ground fast, be hard to hit, and bypass ground defenses? Nah, send those to the forest planet with all manner of **** to run into....

Yeah, the redwoods are really, really hard to photograph. Get a human in the shot and you barely see the tree. No human, no scale comparison. So here, let me help you out with some shots of my friend and I from a previous trip:

Yeah, they're really that big.

I'm willing to forgive the useless tactics at Hoth because it's such a **** cool scene. But you are dead on the money for Endor. As for the whole "Well why didn't they just fly over the trees" question, the redwoods average some 200-300 feet tall (give or take) with some pretty heavy foliage cover at the top. Hard to patrol for enemies under those conditions.

I'm fine with flying bikes in the trees, just maybe not 200 mph....

As a kid I always took it that the forests were already mapped and the scout troopers helmets guided the fast speeds.

Where they came unstuck was not mapping in the furry natives or their Rebel allies :)
