Just a thought about 2.0 for new players

By Larky Bobble, in X-Wing

I was watching the SnV unboxing and I noticed that a lot of the ship title cards remove slots, whilst adding others.

For us 1.0 peeps, no probs. But what about dad and son, who investat a generic store, having seen the boxes. They get home and see cards that tell them to remove slots, and son says "what slots dad?", so dad replies.... "Errrmmmm.....".

I really don't get how FFG can create upgrade cards that talk about the ships slots, without having put those slots anywhere apart from the internet!

It really feels wrong. Points online I can understand, but all cards published should be understandable from the get go.

They are so scared about the mess they created when designing the Jumpmaster (which had too many slots that they could not remove in an elegant way) and later the Tie-Striker (which was lacking slots) that they opted to keep options open I guess.

Sucks, but this is what we got.

I don't think this is as big of a deal as people are making it out to be. One of the first things that should be in every box is the sheet that says "hey guess what, there's an app and a website and other ways to get this other info, go get it!"

Not only that, but if they're not using the app or PDF, they're using quick-builds, and they should realize that they won't have all the info in that case, I guess

As a parent of an eight year old, I have to say that I control my child's screen time. I have no issue with her perusing magic cards for as long as she wishes though. This directly forces you online, and your child with you.

It isn't healthy for you and your family, only the competetive game.

This doesn't force your child online.

You only have to go online for about 2 minutes to download the PDF, one time, and then peruse that at will. You might choose to repeat that 3 or 4 times a year for updated point costs, depending on FFG's schedule and whether or not you want too.

Also with the quick build cards, even that is technically optional.

If you're playing with kids, just use whatever slots you want; if a kid would delight in having EVERY UPGRADE because it's fun, just indulge it.

I feel that, even as a casual player, I was able to remember what ships had what slots after a short time playing them.

Ding ding ding. Print once and its the same as perusing cards.

Also not seeing where the app is persistently online.

It’s not, all data is stored locally, it only needs internet access to check for updates.

But there will be porn adds in the sidebar...Isn’t that obvious?

In order to even understand what the upgrade cards are for you'll need to have read the rules about squad building. You'll therefore have been told about the app/website/PDF. This is another non-problem with 2nd edition.

Ever see the Striker bomb something?

Me neither.

Um, has FFG ever made a decision about XWM that didn't focus on the competitive game?

Twi'leks?

FFG is well aware that competitive only applies to about 5% of the player base, second edition caters extremely well to casual players

We can only hope. I mean, they have to be good for something right?

As long as it's twi'leks it will be fine ?

“What’s a torpedo slot?”

”I don’t know, but we can’t use it with this title.”

Two Words X-wing Players: Unlimited bombs

As a father, I have to say that the obligatory access, even just for downloading stat sheets, really turns me off of 2.0. The evidence of the effects of excessive online access is accumulating. I expect it to hit tobacco levels of disgust in a decade as the addicts wean themselves off.. Note Apple's recent PR ploy to reassure parents like me that they are aware of the problem. Anyone that expects their child to take the hard route via paper is kidding themselves. The appmis obligatory for all. My family only squad builds with cards.

I would really like to get into 2.0. It looks great, from a general play perspective. But this Autumn, GW will be getting my money. I want to buy a full product that is fully referencable within itself, and I'd rather get new stuff.

Next year, if anyone in my area really gets into 2.0 I'll probably get the conversion packs. But I really hope this fails as a wargaming precedent.

Will your family only use cards? will flat out refuse to use a reference pdf.... for some reason you think them using the app or web interface will have some kind of negative effect on them that looking at the physical cards won't.....

Tell them they cant browse facebook and are only allowed on the computer to build there lists (Whitelist the website for squad building and blacklist the rest of the net if they cant be trusted) or have the app on a tablet or phone and have the wifi off when you let them use it (with the password deleted if they cant be trusted).

If you think the screen itself is somehow melting them... well I can't help you because you are a crazy wackadoodle if it's just the internet access there are many many ways around that if you choose to from simply printing the PDF to any of the solutions I mentioned above.

I believe you are creating a problem that does not exist because you don't like change. If it makes you feel better you can probably pay someone to print off the PDF for you and call it a "codex" so that you can have a "full product" that you purchased instead of printing it yourself.

This concern is exactly why they’ve included quick builds/threat levels for 2.0.

Just because they screwed competative x-wing doesn't mean they were not designing for it.

Seconded. And I don't have kids.

How many times have you turned on the computer for one little thing and then pissed away 1-2 hours in vacuous BS?

Um... FFG is following the leader here, since Warmahordes already went digital at least for up to date stuff, as I understand.

You do what you have to do to feel good about your family's hobbies. However, as someone who also plays Warhammer, I wouldn't advise that route. The rule books for that are sold for extra, and generally just present point costs for all the weapons and troops in a big pdf style list at the back. If your child won't take the pdf route in x-wing, they won't take the exact same thing in warhammer either. (Also possible you may be refering to another Games Workshop game I'm less familiar with, but their flagship game is definitely run just like this).

Every game you own has a set of instructions. X-Wing second edition is no different, except you print the instructions out. 6 months or a year later, you can re-print them to get the updated rules. Or don’t bother, if you are playing casually. Viola, that’s it.

The try-yards like me will use the app for immediate access to updates, but that has no impact on what you do with your kid.

Don't quote me out of context @Darth Meanie My post literally described several ways to stop that as a parent...
