Upgrade concerns

By ChaseFK, in Star Wars: Legion

Just saw the new Han Solo commander expansion preview and I'm becoming increasingly concerned. I believe it was Alex Davy that claimed FFG would not repeat the mistakes it made with X-Wing by forcing customers to shop across the faction isle for upgrades and such. While this may be technically true with upgrades being available on both factions, it is still going to hurt the consumer when they put one copy of a generic upgrade in a commander expansion.

I'll elaborate. One copy of Environmental Gear is available only in the Leia and Veers expansions. This upgrade can be equipped on common corps units. If you want two copies for your army, you are forced to either buy commanders for both factions or buy two of your faction's commander. If you want more than two copies, you must buy multiples of the commander expansions. This is unacceptable. There is no reason other than these upgrade cards to purchase multiple commander expansions.

Now that we've seen what comes in the Han Solo expansion, we now know that it contains only one copy of Emergency Stims, another common equipment upgrade. Presumably, one copy will be included with Boba Fett. This is reinforcing an ugly trend. We need to tell FFG that is not cool.

Personally i'd like to see something along the lines of upgrade card packs. otherwise it will be the 3rd party market for me and buying singles.

This is where businesses tend to stick it to customers "politely"

"We said we are going to offer everything for each side without buying both factions. We never said you wouldnt need to repeat buy boxes just to get the upgrades"

In all seriousness though, do you need more than one? That slot is so personalized to the unit i dont really think id even use more than one.

Not to mention you can get The Enviromental Gear from the Fleet TRoopers (They come with one) And likely you'll get the Stims inside the Commandos package. Meaning you only need to buy more Fleet Troopers/Commandos if you want more of those items AFTER you buy Han

TBH point costs are tight as it is though, and so i can't see too many of any common equipment coming in for anyone other than high value Minis

No, Fleet Troopers comes with grappling hooks, not environmental gear. However, it is likely the commandos come with environmental gear or stims, and that the hidden "elite" upgrade card in the Royal Guard expansion (and its rebel counterpart) is likely to be a copy of Hunter. It's gonna be weird getting Improvised Orders in the Palpatine expansion, for that matter, even though that's the most likely place for it to come in for the Empire.

It would be nice if we got multiple copies of each non-unit specific upgrade, though. Both Vader and Palpatine would really like to use Anger (Vader is an action starved fire magnet, and it combos with Palpatine's 1-pip card), but if you run them together you'll be short a copy.

In legion i don't use more than one card despite multiple units using the same card.

My printed list has all the information you need and card is for reference. If official tournaments don't allow it then **** them

well, Legion is also large enough where tournament play would be a bit of a headache.

xwing tournies can last a full day with ~60 people. Imagine Legion, which almost twice the playtime expected estimates, with even 40 people.

Its the prime reason i dont play 40k in tournaments. I dont even factor in how many rude and arrogant 40k players there are at tournaments, i just dont want to play it for that freaking long.

So i wouldnt be surprised if Legion is popular, but the tournament scene is pretty dead.

If you don't count the core, since that is mandatory for both factions, we have just as many expansions we are waiting for (8) as we have already received. There is still a lot of unknowns. There is also not a lot of options right, which makes everything we do have (or in some cases just know about) seem much better than it will when more options are available.. I think the game needs a year before we can accurately see if FFG follow through on what they have said regarding upgrades appearing in each faction expansion. There are bound to be some gaps due to staggered releases.

I'm also not too concerned with not having multiple copies of upgrades. I find myself not using nearly as many upgrades in Legion as in X-wing. I use the extra trooper or heavy before anything else; other cards are just filler. That's not to say that couldn't change with future upgrades, but the extra wound and attack die/dice you gain from that extra trooper is huge.

Yeah definitely dont buy boxes just to get the cards right now.

This sort of game needs quite a few units to be truely fleshed out. Heck right now its kinda stale because theres really only 2 list options (heavy or no heavy? Double commander or single?). That will change once both sides have 3 different Troops, a couple Elites, an Operative or two, 3 Commanders, more than one Support slot and more than one Heavy slot.

Which will take about 1.5 years more than likely to happen (from release not now)
