Creating the Healer

By Mr. Brogger, in Talisman Home Brews

Now for once I put my Topic in the right category sonrojado.gif I am working on a new character wich I will sculpt a miniature for. I have some in my range, but the Healer is at the moment the one closest to my heart corazon.gif So my sculpting plans for now is like this: Toad King, Ice Queen, Healer.

I am making the Healer too because I do not think FFG will make her.

As with the Toad King it would be nice with some input from Talisman fans, so fell free to comment and lets have some Healer discusion.

Healer
Strenght 2
Craft 3
Life 4
Fate 5
Alignment: Good
Start: Village
Special Abilities:
1. You may chose to heal one life of a character you land on. If you do, you replenish all your fate.
2. In the start of your turn, you may use fate tokens to heal your own life. You heal one life for each fate used.
3. You may use fate tokens to prevent your followers from dying (1 fate for each follower to save).
4. You may heal life for free in the village when visiting the healer.

Hmmm... I wasn't certain at first, but then I thought about it. This character introduces a whole new dynamic into the game, for who would want to attack someone who would willingly (if self-servingly) give them free healing?

I LIKE IT! You used the basic game "mechanics" and introduced a new "dynamic" into the game play!

I might add a couple of things... since this is a Healer. Maybe he cannot use weapons of any kind.

Ordinarily I would see the Healer as a decendant of Hypocrates... and he could not willingly attack (take a life) from another. But Talisman doesn't work well for characters like that.

Thank you JC happy.gif

I will take that "no weapon" into consideration. It makes good sense - thank you for that input. I also follow you on that "no character attack" but for the same reason as you described, that would be out of consideration for now.

Ohh, and by the way, I see the Healer as a she, not a he gui%C3%B1o.gif

Yeah, the weapon thing is okay if you wish, but the no attack definitely wouldn't work for a Talisman adventurer. Beyond that, well, it beats my past notions for not needing any further work.

Go it. Do you have something in the works for an illustration? If not... I'd be game to pastiche something in photoshop. Then again you probably do have something in mind and want it to match your miniatures work.

Well, I have started some illustration, but got kinda stuck. I cannot decide how the position on her should be. What should she do, and what shows her as a healer. In my first sketch I had her looking on a little bird sitting on her hand, but then the qustion, she is a healer, why holding the bird. I was thinking something like, she is close to nature and life, but was afraid that she would come to look like something else, like a ranger, druid, tamer or something. Anyway, I have not thrown the idea away yet.

If you have some good ide on how to make the Healers look, I would be very happy to hear or see. I know you have skills JC.

Okay, I've already been looking around... and as much as I've found some things that would sort of work, I didn't run into much that would have a "symbol" along with it like holding a bird. I do know that serpents (strangely enough) have been a symbol of healers in multiple cultures, but that may not work for this idea. So...

Remember I'm not an artist like you; I merely piece together and blend bits of graphics I find (99% never taken from and actual artist's work). I'm going to do some quick and dirty masking of some figures I've found - not my ususal finish work. We'll see if anything strikes your fancy. I'll try to get multiple samples up between now and tomorrow, one at a time or all at once.

Can you tell I was just itching to work on this one but didn't want to step on your toes?

Ohh, great, I look forward to see what you come up with gran_risa.gif I like the work you do JC and also your reserch on things. It did not come to my mind searching for real life symbols for healers. Maybe the serpant will get a place somewhere in the finish - we see as time goes with this. Do not be afraid to step on my toes. They can handle it cool.gif

I hope this projeckt will go as good as the Toad King creation.

Sorry, I couldn't resist... This is how I would like my female healer!

Now THAT is just what she is going to look like partido_risa.gif

DITTO!!! partido_risa.gif I take no one else's wife or girlfriend is looking over their shoulder right now.

Okay, here we go. None of these I think are spot on, but most have something to offer. It was difficult to find stuff that wasn't related to an actual artistic work. All are taken from 3D model sample renders and advertising images, so not a specific artistic work.

No real postwork was done. Tone, color, illustration mimic effects, etc. that would make them look more artsy like some of the other character cards I've done. All of that will come later if one is acceptable. If you notice some roughness around the edges on some, that is because the masking hasn't been refined yet. All figures were vector (vs. raster) masked so adjustments could be made later. In edition, some color changes are possible on all of them.

If none of these suit you, Mr. B., then say so. The work was not wasted, as these are now in photoshop character illustration master file; they'll be used for something someday. Seriously, be as picky as you like.

#1 in psuedo buckskin is bit "new western," but I threw it in anyway. You will notice #2 and #3 are the same; I found one character in multiple outfits, so I chose the two that were the best. The last one is similar to the "Physician" follower in my ITB expansion, but that doesn't really matter. I threw it in because he looked interesting (and was actually from a 3D model called "The Healer") and might also bring a little ethnic diversity to the game.

That's it for now, as dinner is served. Back later or tomorrow.

Healer_1.jpgHealer_2.jpgHealer_3.jpg

Healer_4.jpgHealer_5.jpgHealer_6.jpg

And one more slight maybe I found in my own archives.

Healer_7.jpg

Ohh, these are nice images and definetly worth having in this topic to inspire us all for how the healer should look. I like the position of #1 very munc. I think the outfit on #2 an #3 is a bit too oriental to what I imagine. I like the outfit of #4 and #6, these was something what I looked for. The #6 also got that serpant on him (or maybe dragon). The last pic you posted is also nice. I like the wand with the leaf on it. I think I will do my own illustration of the Healer. It will proabaly not be as good art quality as these you posted, but I think it is fun having something totally new.

These images will for certain be helping me for the look of the Healer, so thank you a lot JC aplauso.gif I post my sketches here when I get so far.

cheers

Very good then, at least they are inspiration. I didn't find any of them to be exactly right myself. Didn't think finding a specific ONE would be this difficult. As said, I'm no artist, so changing body position isn't possible (unless I ever get around to working directly in Poser). I can sometimes patch a few fixtures like items, patterns on attire, or their colors, or add a little something. That's about it. I'll leave the real illustration to real artists.

Here's two more for the sake of it and I'll call it quits and leave you to your own. Keep in mind that these are all at reduced resolution for display.

Healer_8.jpgHealer_9.jpg

Thanks again JC gran_risa.gif And there is the bird too!. I might use some of these images of yours as scabalons for my own art. They are generally better then what I could find myself.

I wil post some sketches here when getting so far. I hope to have you back on this topic later JC.

cheers for now

Whoops... just a few format glitches. Notice that Craft number "3" is out of alignment. And perhaps pull the last sentence on the last ability up to be part of the previous paragraph. You might also capitalize "Good."

But overall, I'm looking forward to trying this one out! He has some unique abilities and yet is not overpowered at a glance.

QUESTION: Would you like me to format a standee token for game play? You can do it yourself of course by using Strange Eons. Jon's plugin has a template for standard standees and his own template for ones that blend well when used painted miniatures.

These are now fixed.

Sounds very good JC. Then I will also be able to use it until the miniature is sculpted gran_risa.gif

cheers

For better quality, use this link: Healer

One more thing... go through the text and decide whether to capitalize Fate, Lives/Life, etc., just to make it look consistent. I'll put together a standee/token later today (and of course get you the PSD master file for download if you like).

I look forward for the healer token happy.gif

Sorry, but what do you mean with: "capitalize Fate, Lives/Life, etc."

Sometimes these terms start with an uppercase letter (from me)... sometimes they don't. Change the all to one way or the other.

Healer is now finished and is until now availeble for download here

Miniature will be availeble later.

Oooo no... my goof this time. In the final ability change "may may" to just "may."

Ohh, I was sure I saw everything okey, but change this as soon as I have more time. Have some kids on my hands right now sorpresa.gif
