Changing Focus Results With Focus Token

By Myotismon, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello All!

Sorry if this has been answered previously. My friend and I searched all over and could not find anything that specifically addressed our issue below:

I was just playing a match with a friend who had the pilot Dengar on his ship.

During his activation phase he threw down a Focus token

During the attack phase he then rolled 4 dice.
-The initial roll was:
-2 hits
-1 Focus
-1 Blank

He then used his focus token first to change the Focus to a hit.
-3 Hits
-1 Blank

Then he used Dengar's ability to reroll his Blank result which then became a Focus result.
-3 Hits
-1 Focus

He said he was then able to change the Focus result to a hit because he had spent the Focus Token. I disagreed stating that the Focus Token was only able to change results at the time that it was played and not retroactively.

What are the rules concerning this scenario?
***Are Focus Tokens able to change results retroactively?

No, spending a Focus token doesn't set up a situation where any subsequent eyes get converted. Your friend is incorrect. He could have gotten the same result, though, by just resolving Dengar first. Generally if you have a Focus token and some kind of reroll ability, you always want to reroll blanks first.

Correct. Spending any token (and indeed, most modifications) is a one-off effect, you don't get to do some of it now, interrupt it with something else, then do some other part of it later.

This is what he should have been looking at. He knows the Focus token will change results so just do all the random (rolling) stuff first.

Thanks all!

As I was typing out the question I sort of figured that this would be the answer, but figured I should get some solid feedback anyways.

Roll of thumb always reroll before you use tokens
