give your party ninja concealment, put blinders on enemy archers, give yourself and a special friend some privacy at a hoe down, blind yourself intentionally for sympathy, cause medieval traffic jams, conceal a pit or other inconvenient terrain feature like lava, make a carnie game called "What's in my magic pool of darkness?" (also a fair riddle for gollum), to cover your nakedness if you wake up hungover in an alley, make drow feel at home, make pygmies worship you when you "blot out the sun" exactly six feet over their heads, hide your demon scrolls, other than that I really couldn't tell you.
