The Ahsoka-Corran duo is joined by a blocking U-wing

By RoockieBoy, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi all! Having played mostly Ahsoka and Corran together for the last year and a half, I've been able to play several different ships/pilots to go along with them, such as Kyle Katarn, Jake Farrell, AP-5... but I've never flown an U-Wing. With the renegades out, I'd like to bring a good blocker, and some control to the list. Enough talking, here's the list:

I haven't played the list yet, but I'll play two league games this evening, we'll see how it goes...

Any feedback and/or tips are totally welcome

Having flown Saw a few times already, the only advice I can offer is that I think the list is going to be interesting depending on how you want to fly it. The U Wing still flies around like it has a giant target on its back (still really sad when your opponent nukes him off the board), so having Corran being your big gun is going to be interesting. With this, I mean that if you want to fly them grouped up to give Corran the maximum benefits , it may just become a shoehorn of blow the Renegade up and then Corran at your leisure. Not to dismiss your list or flying skill or anything: your setup looks really cool, and I have no idea how you fly it: in my experience with flying U wings, the U wing tends to be the first to die without backup or being super offensive and wiping an enemy ship before they can kill you.

That being said, I would guess flying them in a block isn't your plan, rather to fly Ahsoka and Corran near but not right next to the renegade for blocks. I presume Corran just becomes nigh impossible to kill with focus evade lock movement shenanigans for one stress, just not sure how much a blocking U wing will be able to play a role before getting mowed down (again just my experience: I might just be a really bad U wing pilot or against bad match-ups or something).

As far as upgrades, Corran is Corran and Ahsoka is Ahsoka: if you find that you do end up getting blasted before you can get some work done with the U, or having a hard time predicting blocks, Anti Pursuit lasers are always good for extra damage on a blocker, and swapping out Leebo and Intel Agent for Cassian Crew can help with the blocks if you get outmanuvered, and take Hera so you don't worry as much about stres (and being able to do two 0 forewards in a row can be huge: letting enemies breeze past you or have to come closer and risk getting blocked is effective. (Plus Ion Torpedoing the group coming in for your U wing, into a 0 move and a block with free damage would be hilarious: like having a permanent bomb).

Anyhow, just my thoughts. It looks really cool and a lot of fun: I've been running around with saw, two cavern zealots and a Crimson Sq Bomber and enjoying the heck out of it, so best of luck!

Fenn would really be a better support piece than Ahsoka. He can still take Rey and VI, but with an R2 Astro and PRS, can regen a bit - more solid.

My only thing about the U is Leebo. I firmly believe Hera would be WAY better - particularly considering endless stopping can often stymie a chap well enough. You could even throw on APL too...

Thanks for the feedback! I’ll definately be looking into Cassian crew. Hera was my first option, but sometimes a 4s doesn’t get you far enough to block in the first engagement and I thought that Leebo boost could come in handy. It can also be very useful to boost the U-Wing away in the combat phase, k knowing where everybody is...I’ll probably be changing a few things in the U wing depending on how my games go. APL are nice, but one damage can’t be compared to having the opportunity of doing a R1 double tap with Corran into an Ion’d + blocked enemy.

I know Fenn is REALLY useful, but the build you’r suggesting is 26p, and I don’t have enought points to swap one for the other. Also, in my experience Fenn is almost always shot down, while Ahsoka is invincible in some matchups (low PS enemies). Against high PS she will be in trouble, but so will be Fenn. I managed to keep Ahsoka alive in the 6 games I played in the Barcelona Regional early this year, while Fenn would have surely died in some of them. Also, “coordinating” after enemy Fenns is awesome!

About Leebo... you are probably right. My first choice was Hera, but I thought the boost could come in handy in some matchups to close the distance faster and get unexpected blocks. Not sold on APL. Ion projector has saved my bacon several times.

Fair point with Fenn

Yeah, stops can be shockingly stronger than boosting, so I'd really push for that

I've recently found out this configuration for U-wing myself:

Renegade refit, anti-pursuit lasers, ion projector (you can have both!), Hera, thrust corrector, title.

It is a perfect blocker! I've played against reaper aces and boy, wasn't it fun to block the reaper and make him roll twice for dmg and twice for ion, as it had to do ailerons maneuver first :D and than I've stayed there for permanent bumping, ioning and damage :)

I like it, you double up the effect when bumping, but I don’t have enough points...

what if I switch Leebo for Cassian, and Intel agent for Hera? That way I can choose the “obvious” maneuver, and try to guess the least obvious. If my first guess was correct, cool! If it isn’t but I’ve guesses correctly, I can choose another maneuver... It’s a win win scenario!

That sounds like a GLORIOUS blocker

I finally got to play the list last night, against 3x Angels with Snap shot, Flight Assist, S-Foils and integrated joined by Crimson Specialist with thermals and trajectory. I went with the Cassian/Hera combo.

I got stomped hard. Really hard. I lost the roll for initiative and he took it so he could set the snap shots when I moved. The x wings came fast. First engagement saw Corran launch the Ion Torpedoes into one of the X-Wings, hitting for 2 shields, and dealing an ion to the rest of the X-Wings. The U-Wing lost 3 shields.

Next turn Corran got a R1 shot into the damaged X-Wing but couldn't erase it from the board, as it survived on ONE hull. That same guy did 2 hits one crit into the U-Wing which sealed the deal. I had to double tap to finish him off. I didn't PTL with Corran as I needed an open dial to escape from the bomber.

Next turn the bomber did a very scary 2 hard into the board edge while both X-Wings 4-turned. I had dialed a 3 hard on Corran hoping to escape, but nope. Corran was trapped. Nex turn I did a " bank hoping to run away and regen but it wasn't meant to be... Corran ended up eating the 2nd thermal, 2 sets of snap shots, and 2 R1 shots. It didn't end well...
