Looking for advice on staging my NPCs.
Scenario: The PCs are tasked with stopping an assassination attempt. A high ranking Imperial is attending an awards show, like the Oscars. A squad of rogue Npcs are infiltrating the event to take him out. The Rebellion, however, has not sanctioned the hit, as they feel its not the right time for this action, so the PCs are to bring them in, or eliminate them if necessary. I am using the Age of Rebellion pregens as the NPC team.
What I'd like to know from everyone is where to place the individual NPCs for their part in the job, like the Ace has infiltrated the motorcade, the Diplomat has schmoozed her way into the Imperial entourage, etc. So, where should I place everyone?
Thanks in advance.
Setting the Stage
First questions: What are the NPC's motivations?
- Do the NPCs feel the assassination needs to be public to make some sort of statement?
- Do they intended to escape or is it a suicide mission?
- Are they determined enough to fight your Players even though they are on the "same side" (rebellion)
Once you figure out their motivations it might help determine the lengths they are willing to go to and therefore determine what roles/locations they need to accomplish their task.
To play devils advocate here:
- If the answer to the first question is no, then I don't think this operation would even happen. I mean why wouldn't they just ambush him in the alley as he leaves, or put a bomb on his speeder that detonates as he leaves and the NPCs are long gone, or when hes at home alone so as to have less witnesses and better chance they can escape?
- If the answer to the second is suicide mission, why not just have one guy with a bomb?
Also one more thing to consider, what happens if your Players sympathize with the NPCs and would rather go along with eliminating the Imperial rather than fight fellow rebels? Are you cool with that contingency?
It's cool if they end up joining them, I have an evil plan.
I think they would like to survive, and this guy is so high up he's got lots of security. I'm thinking the NPCS are placing themselves at different spots so each could take the chance if another fails.
