My son has expressed alot of interest in legion recently to point of asking for his own core set so he can paint his own army. He's playing x wing and doing decent at it so I'm tempted to cave in and get him enough to field 800 worth of imperial for his birthday. Between watching me and a few friends and a handful of master of the force playthroughs he's confident he can play and possibly beat dad and his friends. See how it goes on teaching legion here soon I guess.
Teaching my son at 7
My daughter is 10 and we've played a couple of times. We've used an abbreviated ruleset. Essentially no suppression and simplified command rules. It's fun.
I have had a similar experience with my youngest son who is 6. He has used money he has saved from Christmas to buy Stormtrooper and Rebel Fleet Trooper expansion sets, but I have not yet let him use the money for a Core set (might be something for his birthday). So far only his Stormtroopers have been painted. He has not really played Legion yet, but has played X-Wing (which he got for Christmas) and has played several games of Imperial Assault with me and my oldest son (both Campaign and Skirmish).
We're expecting our first (Girl) in 2 weeks. I am absolutely excited at the prospect of somebody to play with in the household in a decade.
And you know, somebody else to cut the lawn. Because they're not getting an allowance without working for it.
Will she get an allowance for playing Legion?

I should be done painting it by then.
I play with both my girls (7 and 10) full ruleset, but I essential 'dungeon master' for them, in terms of running the game system and making sure they remember all the rules and their interactions, explaining possibilities when necessary, but letting them make all the choices.
I ask them to check ranges, do the movement, look up the number of dice needed and do the rolling, and they're starting to internalize the system after a few games. Great fun, so I encourage you to try it!
Gonna give it a shot this weekend. He won a game of xwing against a semi meta list last night so we will start with a simple 400 point game and see how it goes.
My son was about 7 when we started Warhammer 40k. I actually think with custom dice it's a bit harder, if your child knows how to count to 10, they know what a 3+ roll is, but counting this icon, minus that icon, etc. adds some extra complexity.
He was about 10 when he first took his army out to play against other people.
My daughter was 10 when she showed an interest in tabletop gaming, but her preference was for more story based - her love of Superheroes led us to Heroclix first, then Imperial Assault campaigns.
I thoroughly encourage these games for kids, there are some great maths skills, there's plenty of instructions that need to be read and understood (lots of life skills).
I always wanted to put on my Resume (or C.V.): 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Dungeon Master 1978 to current; Can read and decipher Gygaxian prose.
This weekend is the weekend to teach my son. He got a core set couple squads of snow troopers and veers. Ill post further updates.

Look forward to hear how it went!
My son has been painting since he was 4, when he started Orcs for LotR Warhammer, and now he is 5 and painting his own stormtrooper unit. I think his painting is very good for his age, and we're going to build a battleground for us both to play on once they are all painted (i've gone with the Rebels out of the core set) but he really is obsessed with it already. He now wants an AT ST and some more speeder bikes.
It's such a great thing to do with your kid(s) for quality time together. I love nothing more than a day of painting, sat next to each other and helping him out with the tricky bits.

We are playing his learning game right now. Its battle lines recover the supplies in clear conditions. 650ish point list. Im playing rebels he is imperials.
His list
Vader
4 dlt and stormies
2 snowies with flamer and extra guy
2 speeders
Likely over in points but its ok
My list is luke force reflex battle mediation
4 z6 squads with extra unit
2 scatters with extra unit
At rt with rotary.
Full battle report later.
Sounds fun. I usually give my daughter a decent points advantage. And try to take some coaching breaks every two turns. Just edged her out 3-2 on recover the supplies this weekend and she still had a great time.
Here he was during troop placement. He did surprizingly good for his first game with just a little help from another friend that we play x wing against regulary. We wound up playing 2 rounds before we called it. He grasped the basics of movement and speeder bikes compulsary move. We experienced a panicked unit and how it loses a move and tries to run away. We tied at 2 objecives each and i had a 3rd until he activated my vaders gaurd unit and wiped the lone fleet trooper with it off the board.
He wiped out a squad of fleet troopers and a squad of rebel troops to me juat causing him to lose a few minis from a few different units.
