Newish player, should I just wait until 2.0?

By Nohwear, in X-Wing

Hello, all. I played briefly a few years ago and I have decided that I want to return. With 2.0 coming, I have to wonder what I should do? Do I just wait until September? Do I just buy ships that will be in the conversion kits?

Probably better to wait, the Conversion Kits get you extra value since you've already played a lot and amassed a large collection of ships. Might as well wait and jump on with a whole bevy of other new players

I am a brand new player.

First got interested about the time they announced 2.0.

I bought the wave 14 sets that have 2.0 content in them & am searching ebay etc for cheap ships that will be in the conversion kits.

If you don't have many ships take this time to search some good deals from people who are selling theyr collection.

If you're wanting to try it out again but not ready to commit I'd say wait.

If you're pretty sure you're back on board and will probably stick with it for awhile I'd say try to find good deals on ships now because when 2nd edition comes out the prices of ship packs will be more expensive (about $5 more on average).

Basically, it comes down to how much $$$ you want to spend up front. The cheapest in the long run will be to buy someone’s collection off of eBay and then get conversion kits and starter set when they come out, but you’d be looking at several hundred dollars right from the get go. That might be too expensive for some people’s budgets.

Alternatively, you can ease into it by just starting with the 2.0 Core Set and a few ships from wave 1 from the faction(s) you want to play, then pick up additional ships as they are released for 2.0. More expensive in the long run (or well, less shop for your dollar), but not so expensive up front.

But if he is just playing with the ships from the first wave he will be in disadvantage when playing against someone who has a complete collection.

Not in the Re-release only format. Also, if everything is balanced, than it will not matter if you have five expansions or fifty.

One friend of mine wanted to start in X-Wing and asked me the same question. I said he should wait for the 2nd Edition.

If you really think that someone won't find a way to unbalance the game you will be desapointed.

Hence the word "if", also, rebalances will occur every 3-4 months to ensure balance.

If I was new I'd be deal hunting like no other.

New small based ships will sell for $20 ($15ish online), if you can buy old ships IN BULK for less than $10 + conversion kit(s) is a great deal in my book.

I'm aiming at £5 or less per small ship.

I've got 6 ships in the last week.

Enough to be building a fleet without busting the budget...

I don't think a new or newish player should wait until 2.0 for a few reasons:

You're going to develop your spatial awareness if you play now . There is no substitute for actual table-time to help you learn how to fly around rocks, fly in formation, or eye-ball distances for maneuvers & range. Learn to focus fire. Learn your win objectives. Learn how all the ships move and fight. The sooner you get that experience under your belt, the stronger a player you will be when 2.0 arrives. Granted, there are changes moving from 1.0 to 2.0, some bigger than others (Jumpmasters anyone?) but we're all going to be adjusting to it together.

Also, you don't quite know what your play style is yet in the beginning . Are you more Imperial, Rebel or Scummy? In my heart, I'm Rebel all the way, but in practice, Imperials suit me best. Where do you find your joy? Figure out what you want from the game: do you want to win at any cost? do you want to be thematic? or is trolling people more fun for you? Most folks aren't that narrowly defined, but you'll find out which way you lean once you get going.

You aren't limited to playing only one faction, but if you're trying to be thrifty, you can sort out which faction fits you now before 2nd edition hits and then go all in on that faction. Regarding this, if you buy 1.0 ships now, mostly in the faction you've chosen, you can pick up the 2.0 core and faction conversion kit and be set to go.

I hope you enjoy 1.0 for the next few months. It can be oppressive at times to fight against lists that neuter you before you get to do much of anything, but change is coming . Temper your expectations. Set small goals: no accidental bumping, no hitting asteroids, launch all your missiles in the first round of combat, choose one enemy ship and take it down, etc.

The bones of the game are the same in both editions, so learn how it works and you'll be an Ace in no time at all.

I think that I shall start playing now. Besides the reasons above, it would also be nice to meet my local meta before the possible influx of new people. Although I must admit that impatience is also playing a part. I just hope that I am not merely jumping on the advice that tells me what I want to hear.

Well best thing to do first is pick a faction (in 1st Ed. I say 2 but that is no longer necessary). If you want to play Resistance or First Order then waiting is probably the best you could do but you could start with the TFA core and then get the conversion kits which should be cheaper. If you want to play another faction the preorder the conversion kit and core set and get the 1st edition ships from that faction of the ones you want to play.

If you are undecided, or just want a casual game, then might be best just to start with 2.0 core and just get the 2.0 ships as they come out. You might even decide to skip Saw's Renegades and TIE Reaper.

Definitely Scum and Villainy for me.

You could possibly find a player on the "outs" from the game, and pick up their Scum ships & models, and then buy a Scum conversion kit.

Nah, not at all. It sounds like you’re not actually looking for Advice, but rather, confirmation that now is a good time to get in the game. It is. Lots of people are selling their collections off so you can pick up ships for cheap and start playing right away.

A little more advice as you start shopping around:

I wouldn’t spend more that 50% of MSRP for any used ships right now, and you can probably find ships for sale for a good deal less. Some people are still trying to get 50% or more of what they spent back by selling off ships, but you can do better than that. Right now in my area there is a guy selling a bunch of small ships for $5 a piece- that seems much more reasonable to me.

Dont spend anything extra for promo alt-art cards- they are about to become completely obsolete with 2.0 and they don’t actually add any playability to the game, they just look pretty (well, most some of them do).

I also probably wouldn’t spend anything extra for acrylic tokens or maneuver templates. Aside from the range rulers, most of the components are getting slight tweaks and adjustments with 2.0, so you don’t want to be left with a bunch of obsolete acrylic pieces. I mean, they’ll technically still work for 2.0, more or less, but certain things like the shape and color of the tokens as well as the center lines on the maneuver templates are going to start to matter in second edition.

Good luck and have fun! :)
