Has anyone successfully broken down a 2.0 X-Wing?

By Kehl_Aecea, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

As the title states, has anyone been able to break one down into it's components? I have two copies of Saw's Renegades and I really want to fix the wings to correctly open and close (I personally feel it's either too much paint or material keeping them from moving their full ranges).

You could be the first...

Take pics.

I'd pop the cannons off first to avoid bending them.

I'm also interested in this, we were promised moving S-foils but what we got is a little underwhelming (since I have a friend who got one of the ones from Worlds and those are fantastic). Peeking in, it looks like there's some glue and lots of paint wedged in the mechanism. I wonder if just stripping all the paint would fix it, and then go from there? Anyone know the best way to strip paint (and maybe a little glue)?

Note that the word on the street is the the v2.0 X Wings work better than the Saws X Wings.

Was thinking of doing this with my Saw's U-boat. But since I don't use Airbrush or rattlecans I'm hoping with my thinned paints, brush only, I can hopefully avoid getting paint in the mechanism for the x-wings. Also I want 6 moving S-foil x-wings before I mix a batch of paint for uniform color.

I just took apart one of mine:

Look at all that disgusting glue in there. Gross.

They must have dialed it in by the time they got to the 2.0 X-wing expansion.

How did you take it apart?

I'm going to add pictures from this page to the Showcase Index: Assembled Disassembling Pictures

First, pry an Xacto or Swiss Army knife into the seam in the back:

Then hold your other thumb on the cockpit and press in with the knife until you hear a pop (the glue on the back cracking)

Now, you can go into all those little seams around the droid to try to loosen up the glue some more, but it doesn't always work great. Basically you just have to pry that top part up with brute force.

if it breaks rather than relinquish its hold on the glue, you should still be able to get the flappy wings out to clean off the glue and you should be able to fix it with superglue and maybe a little bit of Liquid Green Stuff.

So easy, you can do it laying down on the couch!

Very Awesome! Waiting till I have 6 with movable S-foils. Because I'm going to have to make the paint color I want for them. Question, has anyone cracked open a Kirzax fighter? I'm not sure if I just want to add the engine upgrades, or if it's worth it moving the cockpit back and moving the Nosecone.

Those pictures were super helpful. I just popped mine open and the movement is a lot crisper after cleaning the goop off the inside. Much less spongy. Thanks!

Amazing! Thanks! I now have a weekend project... so... most likely scenario is one of the Partisan X-Wings will not make it out of this alive, but the other will be PERFECT

Tried to pry mine apart after a wing just fell off after opening the pack, figuring might as well give it a go (put in a request with Asmodee for a replacement before starting my erstwhile experiment). The seam at the end of the fuselage was easy, bit around the astromech, much less so, I ended up snapping the top piece off, with the astromech section stuck to the fuselage. Cleaned out a TON of tacky glue residue using acetone and an Exacto. If anybody has details for a better method, please let me know. I tried gluing the detached s-foil back to the engine assembly, but the plastic was deformed, probably due to a manufacturing issue. Putting it back together was a hassle since the top piece didn’t come off cleanly. Also, double check your wing markings as I put in mine in reverse, leaving the black chevrons on the bottom. It kinda works? It probably won’t hold up to regular use, it’s got a huge crack behind the astromech, but it was worth the experience.

"Battle Damaged"

So, managed to pry open BOTH X-Wings without issue. One was gunked up with excess paint. The other uncured glue which I'm still scraping out after an hour. The first X-Wing works BETTER, but not ideal. I'm not sure what I can do with this second one because... well... this is just a MESS. I might just give up and retire this one once 2.0 hits... which is kinda disappointing.

I just opened mine to give it a go: the back snaps open easily, but opening the rest was difficult.
I didn't manage to snap the astromech part so the top part just flexed until I managed to get the wings outby putting them at 90 degrees as leverage.

I cleared some gooey glue with a small piece of wood and soap until none remained apparent (the inside of the hull was hard to clean).

Then put them back together and it felt better. I used the occasion to prime everything when disassembled for painting later :)
Will report when I glue the back portion together.

Cheerios! And good luck!

TIME OUT! Anyone else have more than one of these and realize they're made of different plastic?! One of mine is made out of a more rubbery material and the second is much harder and rigid... it's also the one with the gummy glue.

At least you guys are having better succuss with you x-wings moving then i did with a v1 Imperial Shuttle, the first time i tried lowering my wings into flight mode, there was a loud cracking sound in the model and the frame where the left wing connected to the ship was separating apart some how.

I have two but they both feel rubbery with mushy s-foil action. I haven’t had a chance to take them apart yet.

Cool! I fixed it...

I just need to add the tiniest, smallest, most minuscule amount of glue- shouldn't be hard, right? ?

UPDATE: Not very happy with it, to be honest. Should I try it again with a more rigorous attempt at goo removal or send in a replacement request?

update & grammar

Go ahead and ask for a replacement. The worst that will happen is you get denied.

I tried but failed to fix it. I will ask for a replacement...I feel bad asking for a replacement again. I had an M3-A last year, without a peg hole thing. FFG sent a whole new model.)

I have a photo to post of my BROKEN model... but this forum has some weird upload characteristics*. I reduced the file size to 70kb and it says it's still too big.

The peg that holds the two wings in an axis broke off. I'm bummed. Hope I can get a replacement.
