How many points should I have for a game

By Tikikai, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I just bought the two core sets, heros of the rebellion expansion, and slave 1 expansion. Based off of this, what should our point value threshold be? I'm new to X-Wing and don't know what to do about this. Thanks.

100 points

Do what you feel is right but 100 points is the tournament standard and you shouldn't have any problems reaching that for both sides with what to have even if you don't want to proxy cards.

Welcome to the game! With the ships you have, you should be able to build a reasonable 100 point squad for both Rebel/Resistance and Imperial/First Order factions (though you may need to bolster your collection come Second Edition, since you'll subsequently have fragments of 4 different factions).

As a side note, you're definitely stronger for your light side squads than your dark side ones. Rey + Finn and Poe + R2-D2 are both very potent units to field, while the specific pieces you have leave you with underwhelming Imperial options.

Which ships would help balance things out?

Well, looking forward, I would stick with ships that are Imperial (rather than First Order), since you'll get the most bang for your buck as the game moves into Second Edition. I think a Decimator is a great choice, because it's big, solid, and can pump out tons of damage. Imperial Veterans is also a nice pick-up, for some great Defender and Bomber pilots.

If you want to go First Order instead, both the TIE/fo and TIE/sf expansions have solid fighters, and the Silencer (while expensive) is a VERY nasty fighter. While they will have virtually no use when 2nd edition first arrives, they'll come back with a vengeance by next summer, when the Sequel Factions finally get their conversion kits in.

Thank you

Beyond that, I would just go with what you like! Pick your favorite ships from the movies and other stories, and have fun with 'em. When Second Edition rolls around in a couple of months, you'll have your pick of ships to start fresh from.
