new character the pirate

By darthmax1, in Talisman Home Brews

strength - 3

craft - 3

life - 4

fate - 4

alignment - evil

begins play at city

may cross the storm rive instead of normal movement when at the tavern, city, or village

shang hi ( probably spelled wrong, i know ) - land on character, roll one die. 1 - 2 = you miss one turn 3 - 4 = opponent misses a turn

plunder - land on character. roll one die. 1 = lose a life. 2 = plunder 1 gold. 3 - 4 = plunder all gold. you may only plunder when in a scace that touched the river

you may add one to your roll at the city, unless you roll a 1.

shanghai is a derogatory term meaing to "kidnap and force into service as crewman of a vessel." It is very specific subform of kidnapping. What you describe for results of the roll would be better called "waylay"... to "ambush in order to delay, rob, or murder," though that's also not completely what the roll implies.

then shanghai is exactly the word im looking for. they miss their turn while escaping a captive crew. ; )

oops. on a roll of 3 - 6 you plunder all gold , or shanghai a drunk fisherman.

Then you need to have the effect match the term. At best, the Pirate is delaying another character, not pressing them into service of any kind that is evident. You saying that, but it isn't there. And "waylay" is sometimes used as a synonym for "shanghai", so it works either way.

Avoid culturally derogatory terms if possible... and it is possible. As a ten year student of Chen-shi Taijiquan, I've spent a decade around Chinese nationals, Chinese immigrants, and Chinese Americans in part. I studied with those who have a cultural background related to the art. Shanghai as a verb is offense to some of Chinese descent.

I'm also a writer/author by profession. Words are my vocation and avocation.

Obliviously causing offense to others isn't necessary... but if you want to be immature, go right ahead.

The Pirate of Talisman 2E ... easily adaptable to 4ER.

See also the Saracen of 2e... a selective combination of some (not all of both) of their abilities would be close to a more interesting Pirate.

scratch shang hai and plunder

add you may add 1 to your roll at the city and tavern, unless you roll a 1.

still thinking.......

scratch all river crossing

add when you begin your turn at the city, you may pay 2 gold to cross the river

Or maybe at the City... two gold to hop to any corner space in the outer region? And one gold to cross the river?
