Skill upgrade and die pool upgrade?

By Darryl89, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Hey, I'm very confused whether upgrading a skill also upgrades your dice pool for that skill check. In the beginner game, it says that gaining 1 skill rank changing your dice pool from 2 green ability dice to 1 green ability die and 1 yellow proficiency die. I have spent ages looking through the core rulebook to see if this is the same with all skill rank upgrades but I cannot find anything that explains it.

So basically, I wish to upgrade my skill rank in computers. Does each rank upgrade earn me an extra die or an upgrade a current die?

Essentially your skill check is made as follows, you take the higher of the two of your characteristic and skill rank and this determines how many dice you roll initially these are all green dice, the lower number determines how many of these dice her swapped for yellow ability dice.

So to answer your questions if the skill ranks is lower than your characteristic then increasing it will add more yellow (but not more dice) if it is equal to or greater than your characteristic then it adds further green dice

In general, if the term upgrade is used, it's referring to changing the type of die, either from green to yellow, or in the case of a difficulty pool, purple to red. If the term increase is used, that actually means adding another die to the pool itself. If it's an increase , barring any other factors involved, you would simply add another green, or purple to the pool, as necessary. Further factors might upgrade that additional die (due to flipping a Destiny Point for example, or some talent that let's you do it if one exists), but the base would just add another die.

So for the example of your computers check, let's say you have an Intelligence of 4, and only `1 skill rank in Computers currently. Your dice pool for Computer checks, as is, would be 3 green, and 1 yellow. A total of 4 dice, due to your Intelligence score being the higher of the two, and it's 4, thus, 4 dice. The 1 yellow represents your current skill ranks of 1, so only 1 die is yellow. If you then buy a 2nd rank of Computers, it will upgrade one of your 4 die, from a green to a yellow, bringing you to 2green/2yellow for your Computer checks. The number of die you have to work will, will not increase very often, at least not your base pool, boost die are completely different and not what I'm referring to.

The only time you would see your pool increase from 4 to 5, is by either buying Cybernetics to boost your Intelligence to 5, spending XP to purchase the Dedication talent (and boosting your Int by 1), OR, buying enough ranks in Computers (in this case 5), to push your skill ranks to the higher stat of the two. Because remember, your maximum dice pool is always determined by the higher of the two stats, Characteristic, or Skill rank.

Thanks both of you, I completely get it now!
