Last King of the Block (Finn/Rey Falcon + Saw)

By theBitterFig, in X-Wing Squad Lists

* note * it's not a blocking list, but Forest Whitaker = Last King of Scotland; John Boyega = Attack the Block, so....

I've loved the old Super-Cassian. Expert Handling, Advanced Sensors, Kyle Katarn, Inspiring Recruit, Experimental Interface. Renegade Refit decreases the cost of this by 3 which is nice, and maybe adding Engine Upgrade would be cool, for Boost > Barrel Roll > Green move, but Saw is out there cheaper, and he might be better than Cassian in general. However, Saw's ability doesn't really work with the old build. You'll be discarding your stress long before you attack, so it seems silly to use the same build. So perhaps the following:

  • Rey (Expertise, Finn, Kanan Jarrus, MF-TFA, Engine Upgrade) [62]
  • Saw (Push the Limit, [Collision Detector or Targeting Scrambler], Recon Specialist, Jan Ors, title, Renegade Refit, Engine Upgrade, Autothrusters) [37]

So this Saw can PTL (often with white moves, if Rey and Kanan are close by), Boost, and wind up with Focus/Evade with Autothrusters and an offensive reroll. Rey now gets also Engine Upgrade, so the whole squad is just lighting fast. 4-forward + Straight Boost is a massive NINE ship lengths. Try to "Rule of 11" that, Imperial Scum! 3-Bank into opposite Bank-Boost is about 8, with a nifty little curve to it.

One point left? Sounds like a good spot for Thrust Corrector since you seem ambivalent about the 0 point options.

I guess, but I'm already going to be stressed from PTL, so that's kinda risky, plus between Autothrusters, Jan Ors, and Recon Spec, cutting out my green dice is pretty suspect. I have no doubt there are U-Wings this would be solid on, but I don't know if I like on this one in particular. On the other hand, it opens up the ability to not Push the Limit, and just grab tokens sometimes. With those 0-point System upgrades, they're very much a "use them once and they're worth it, so likewise this. Getting one evade once when you completely fail on dice might be OK, even if the plan is to ideally never use it.

It's really a shame this can't be equipped on a TIE Punisher. Perhaps the 4 or lower Hull restriction should have been only for Large ships, to lock out Lambda, Epsilon, and VCX. A Punisher mostly needs to stay alive to shoot, and a low PS one with LRS rolling in with focus/TL and one of these is going to live to shoot. It'd have been a reasonable buff to an under-used ship.

Please post how Saw/Rey does!!

I would NOT use the Scrambler - CollDet is more helpful. However, I do wonder if AT is worth it? Generally though, I dig the principle of the build, though Saw keeping arc might prove challenging.
