Happy Friday: favorite faction specific upgrades?

By Church14, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Happy Friday cuz we can. What are people’s favorite faction specific upgrade? I’d say list both figure and non-figure.

Are people wanting to rune Deathmist Banners and Unhallowed Wind on an Ardus powered 2 tray Reanimate? Make a little plaguemonster until the eventually (we hope) zombies arrive?

Are players going to bring Support Scions and Lay of the Land and make an infuriatingly maneuverable DarnatiStar?

I’ve focused on non-figure, but if players have a figure upgrade they just love, to for it. Only absolute requirement is make it faction specific.

Figure: Lance Corporal. Spearmen fighting at 3 with either a hit or +1 defense is great, and the optional charge 4 at 8 is also great. Really opens up the unit.
Runner-up: Raven-Pennon Bearer. I can't confidently say it's really worth its points, but it CERTAINLY messes with the opponent's math.

Non-figure: Forged in Battle. It might be too slow in this Uthuk world, but I quite like the ramping up effect, and it's nice that it's not in the precious Training slot.
Runner-up: Piercing Strike. Carrion Lancers are phenomenal blockers, so I've very much enjoyed cutting through them on the charge!

All-time favorite: Lingering Dead . It has great theme, and really takes the sting out of enemy attacks that occur before the Reanimates can strike back.

Figure upgrade: Ankaur Maro . Again, this whole regeneration thing is why I like the undead in the first place, and this guy does it very well.

Figure runner-up: Blighted Vexillum Bearer . Blight them when they come in for an attack. What's not to like? Raven Standard Bearer is perhaps stronger for the points, but it doesn't synergize as well with Lingering Dead, which is why I prefer Blighted Vexillum Bearer.

Non-figure runner-up: Combat Ingenuity . Maybe I'm still living in the early days of the game, but the only thing better than regenerating, is weakening enemy attacks while regenerating. Combat Ingenuity finds a great home on Reanimate Archers, who I like to put next to the 12-tray Ardus block for blight-dealing goodness.

(There are a lot of Waiqar upgrades that I love, but these upgrades find their way into my army lists more often than the others).

I feel similarly to this... also a fan of Deathmist Banners.. I need to put them on the field more.

Combat Ingenuity

Never leave home without it. This thing is my bread and butter. It makes MCW into a meatgrinder, it makes RAs into the Blight Battery, heck, you can combo it on DKs with Duskblade to make them the ultimate cavalry slayers! I suspect it will only get better with time, and to speak to the lore connection... HECK YES the ancient spirits of my skellingtons have learned a thing or two in the last few centuries of war. Let them show you a few tricks ;)

Support Carrion Lancer

Because the only thing worse than a shambling horde of skellymans is the big ugly worm that occasionally pops up to blast you in the face with a toxic loogie while they march. Synergizes with a lot of Waiqar abilities that need Blight to function and bolsters my HP while he's at it.

Obcasiam's Gauntlet

Because it makes me think of the old school Warcraft Death Coil that DKs would spit out. Sure, you knocked us down, but we gave you the gift that keeps on giving! Enjoy rotting from the inside, fleshling!

Ardus' Fury

Because I love Ardus, and I LOVE setting up three-way surge borrowing doom circles, and the only thing that makes that better is when I remember "oh yeah, I totes get an extra surge! Let's go ahead and add one more Mortal Strike"

Raven Standard Bearer

2x2 Reanimate Archers sporting this guy with the help of Host of Crows are my ranged counterpuncher. They can fire faster than any other ranged unit that isn't somehow enhanced, and with a full rank + CI, they can generally blight out any return fire before it even gets off the ground.

Honorable Mention: Lingering Dead

The only reason this doesn't excite me more is because it seems more like a fix than an upgrade. It makes Regenerate less than terrible and has become nearly an auto-include. I wish it were just baked in to Reanimates. Oh well.

Honorable Mention: Tempered Steel and Mastercrafted Weapons

Not faction specific, but I only use them on Waiqar so... here they go. Who doesn't like more Hits? Tempered Steel goes on my skellington archers when I want a little extra punch, MCWs slips in anywhere I can pair it with Combat Ingenuity. Both are conditional, but both are staples of my upgrade game.

Honorable Mention: Aggressive Drummer

I don't feel like he counts, since he is one of the common musician upgrades, but man this guy shines on Reanimates. If you've never tried moving a 12-tray unit along the speed 1 wheel template, do so now. It might blow your mind how much more dangerous he can make that shambling horde.

Blighted Vexillum Bearer: It is a solid defensive upgrade in the heraldry slot. Opponents regularly forget to calculate it into their expected damage output on a charge. It is very reasonably priced. It has cool potential synergies with other blight abilities (death caller, carrion lancers). But most importantly, the reanimate banner carrier figure just looks awesome.

This, this, THIS!

Malcorneʼs Bequest Running with multiple fire runes, and possibly a few other upgrades that need unstable magic, you hand this to Maegan, who's capable of rallying to un-exhaust it when needed, and you rarely have a turn without unstable magic, and frequently have a four-unstable attack.

Deepwoods archers with fire runes are amazing glass cannons. The bequest makes them reliable glass cannons.

Serrated Spines Now, this may change after I play with it a few times, but from a thematic perspective I was looking forward to an upgrade like this since the game was announced. I love the idea of my Uthuk Y'llan causing extra carnage with their Ynfernael-gifted bone spurs.

I'm really looking forward to putting this on some units that are blessed with Kethra's Unnatural Growths condition so really show how deadly my spiky locust swarm can be.
