Does Fake Saturation Work?

By HealOverTime, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Say the below Scurrg attacks a friendly Starviper with its cruise missiles, chooses not to roll additional attack dice equal to the speed of its manuever, and then most likely misses. Will this set off both saturation salvo (vs ships with < 3 agility) and munitions failsafe? If so it would be very situational of course but maybe I have missed a rule somewhere.

Lok Revenant — Scurrg H-6 Bomber 26
Saturation Salvo 1
Cruise Missiles 3
R5-TK 0
Munitions Failsafe 1
Havoc 0
Ship Total: 31

It works. But it costs 5 points and 3 to 4 slots to do half a damage on average so its not remotely worth it.

It would work, but not against a Starviper because of its agility (3) vs the cost of the cruise missile (3).

SS still triggers but cannot damage the Viper.

This. Even as a situational trick, look at what you give up: Long-Range Scanners or Guidance Chips, plus either Deadeye, Crack Shot, or the cheaper PS 1 version. So the ship is a lot worse at doing the normal attacks a generic Scurrg could do, without gaining much in the process. A PS 1 Scurrg with LRS, Autoblaster Turret, and maybe one of the nifty 1-point Scum crew (Boba Fett or Greedo would be spicy) is going to be 27 points. So 4 points lower than Fake-Saturation, and probably a far more effective ship overall.

Skipping the crew would allow you to add Trajectory Simulator via the title, which when combined with Bomblet Generator, even on a PS 1 Karthakk Pirate, is probably going to be a far more effective AOE platform, and LRS/ABT/BG/TS comes in at 30 points, still a point cheaper than the Saturation version.

Huh, my mind erred, but you are right. It's just that my meta is filled with so many 3 agility ships that my mind made the leap automatically that no one would be damaged ;)

It might see better mileage in an epic format, and the imperial aggressor pilot "Double Edge" could get even more value out of this combo if you're willing to pay up for a second cruise missile. Probably not terribly effective, but there's room for shenanigans there.
