Is Ackbar the right choice?

By Herr Style, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

I just did a couple of games the other week with a brand new list which had triple MC30 Torps with Dodonna. The problem I had was that I found it hard to get them into position to deliver their payload. Also, I think I played them too timidly to be honest, so I thought that maybe swap them out for Ackbar and play two of the MC30’s as scouts to deliver long range fire, and have one Torp to dive in the following round or two for close up work.

This is my list: -

MC30c Scout Frigate (69)

• Admiral Ackbar (38)

• Intel Officer (7)

• Gunnery Team (7)

• Turbolaser Reroute Circuits (7)

• Foresight (8)

= 136 Points

MC30c Scout Frigate (69)

• Intel Officer (7)

• Gunnery Team (7)

• Turbolaser Reroute Circuits (7)

= 90 Points

MC30c Torpedo Frigate (63)

• Sensor Team (5)

• Assault Concussion Missiles (7)

• Admonition (8)

= 83 Points

GR-75 Medium Transports (18)

= 18 Points

Squadrons:

• Shara Bey (17)

• Tycho Celchu (16)

• Rogue Squadron (14)

• YT-2400 (16)

= 63 Points

Total Points: 390

My thoughts are to fling 5 red dice at long range using TRC’s and also Int Offr to threaten either brace or contain token. Shara and Tycho to hold up enemy Sqns for a turn or two, whilst the two Rogues can either help out or go hunting.

Have you considered Sato? You already have a lot invested in squads.

I’ve only 4 squadrons, so I was a bit wary of that choice.

Imo that is not many squads to warrent Sato... once those squads go down, Sato becomes 32pts of wasted space, for current configuration Ackbar is fine i think.

As for Sato most people use him and just enough squads to fling black at long range rather than looking at what I would run him as a bomber carrier/gunboat hybrid.

Eg. Defiance MC80 Command Cruiser with Y-Wings.

That sounds more like a Dodonna fleet though? There's an argument to be made that Sato doesn't do anything to benefit squadrons - unlike Dodonna, who does benefit from choosing bomber crits - and if you have too many carriers issuing squadron commands you're not going to be getting the most of what Sato. I think you ideally want the minimum squadrons necessary to make Sato work and focus on not only converting blacks at long range but also concentrating in additional blacks rather than giving squadron commands.

Ackbar works well on this list, although sensor team is kind of useless. With 3 MC30s, you don’t need a bid, as youcan deliver serous threat to multiple enemy ships so that only one of them will be able to actively first and escape. Upgrade sensor team to H9 Turbolasers. You should also move Ackbar to the admonition and put Lando on it, as he’ll be safer there

So I think I will ditch sensor team, and add in OE and H9’s to leave me on 397. Might keep Ackbar on Foresight, as I don’t intend him to get any closer than red range, so the Torp ship would need Admo more. No room for Lando unfortunately.

i think I will try this out, and see how it goes. I will let you know how things go if I manage to get to the next Tournie in July. Thanks for the input guys, appreciated as always.

I was actually thinking, as I really suck at Squadrons, and don't own any apart from the core X Wings and R+V, to try squadron less, and go **** for leather at the enemy carriers? So I came up with this: -

Commander: Admiral Ackbar

Assault: Targeting Beacons
Defense: Hyperspace Assault
Navigation: Solar Corona

CR90 Corvette A (44)
• Admiral Ackbar (38)
• Lando Carissian (4)
• Turbolaser Reroute Circuits (7)
• Jaina's Light (2)
= 95 Points

MC30c Scout Frigate (69)
• Intel Officer (7)
• Gunnery Team (7)
• Turbolaser Reroute Circuits (7)
• Foresight (8)
= 98 Points

MC30c Scout Frigate (69)
• Intel Officer (7)
• Gunnery Team (7)
• Turbolaser Reroute Circuits (7)
= 90 Points

MC30c Torpedo Frigate (63)
• Ordnance Experts (4)
• Assault Proton Torpedoes (5)
• Admonition (8)
= 80 Points

GR-75 Combat Retrofits (24)
• Slicer Tools (7)
• Quantum Storm (1)
= 32 Points

Squadrons:
= 0 Points

Total Points: 395

Was thinking as a possibility of moving Ackbar off the CR90 and putting him on Admo, then removing Lando to try and ensure I get first player?

If you drop the two gunnery teams, Lando, and Foresight, you could squeeze in another flotilla with a Comms Net and give yourself a more respectable bid. Six activations and first player is highly desirable.

How about no Lando (+4) reduce combat flotilla down to transporter (+6), no slicer tools (+7) and no Foresight (+8). Then add extra flotilla (18), Comms net (2), and Repair Crews on the other (4). Then puts me on 394! I thought about keeping Gunnery Teams on the Scouts as I intend to initially only have one side pointing at the enemy to start!

I didn’t even notice the combat retrofits. Yeah, get rid of that. Slicer tools would actually be a potential life saver against Yavaris. Don’t do repair crew. Comms net is so much better. It seems like you’re really into the gunnery teams. They may work out well, I’ve just found that they don’t earn their points back on the small bases. Also, TRCs can only be used on a single shot, so you lose a lot of damage output without TRCs or rerolls. I’d also want to shoot for a 15+ point bid, but that might be a bit crazy. Just some thoughts after a few games with similar lists.

I feel like this would have a real chance against a variety of lists:

Points: 383/400

Commander: Admiral Ackbar

Assault Objective: Most Wanted
Defense Objective: Hyperspace Assault
Navigation Objective: Solar Corona

MC30c Scout Frigate (69 points)
- Intel Officer ( 7 points)
- Turbolaser Reroute Circuits ( 7 points)
= 83 total ship cost

MC30c Scout Frigate (69 points)
- Intel Officer ( 7 points)
- Turbolaser Reroute Circuits ( 7 points)
= 83 total ship cost

GR-75 Medium Transports (18 points)
- Comms Net ( 2 points)
= 20 total ship cost

GR-75 Medium Transports (18 points)
- Comms Net ( 2 points)
= 20 total ship cost

CR90 Corvette A (44 points)
- Jainas Light ( 2 points)
- Turbolaser Reroute Circuits ( 7 points)
= 53 total ship cost

[ flagship ] MC30c Torpedo Frigate (63 points)
- Admiral Ackbar ( 38 points)
- Admonition ( 8 points)
- Lando Calrissian ( 4 points)
- Ordnance Experts ( 4 points)
- Assault Concussion Missiles ( 7 points)
= 124 total ship cost

= 0 total squadron cost

Not saying that you should run my list exactly, but just so you get an idea of the direction I’m suggesting. I’d like slicer tools, but I like the bid more. By all means, do the gunnery teams, they may end up being vital!

How about add in slicer tools and Quantum Storm to one GR75 and remove Comm Net? That puts me then on 389?

Totally do-able if you don’t anticipate high bids.

Fingers crossed there aren’t. Thanks for the advice on this!
