The Fires Within

By Coyote Walks, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

I have a Facebook account and I get "this content is not currently available".

Btw, shouldn't the cards be up on CardGameDB, since they come out next week in stores?

First off, thanks; this is really helpful.

Second... * Ikoma Ikehata needs to die for that pun!

I agree. Only Unicorns are allowed to make pony jokes.

Cards are now up on CardGameDB.

That Soshi is f-ing busted man.

Also, free Mono-No-Aware off that Phoenix attachment.

Really, how often are there resources enough to win all 4 conflicts? Realistically, you may get 1-2 per turn. That is assuming your opponent doesn't whiff on the dynasty phase.

But it's a guaranteed 1-2 per turn. On top of Scorpion's existing dishonor tech. It's like Backhanded Compliments that you don't get to draw cards from.

I guess thank the Kami Crab finally got decent access to Cloud the Mind this cycle.

People are going to have to change their bidding strategy...the always bid 5 has to be reigned in.

The problem is if you give your Scorpion opponent that much of a hand advantage this card alone will end up draining most of the honor bump you get from it. What we need are more cards that punish your opponent for having a higher bid than you. Since that is the rumored sub-theme for next cycle maybe after it we'll see a change but until then it will be hard to break that meta.

So the Mantis that was mentioned, but not seen....

Not a bad card. Annoying that it is locked behind the Air Role (I will not sully my person with Crane Dynasty cards). Amusing that the Clan with an Air Role probably won't run it.

It'll be a fun card once we have a stronghold that lets us play all Mantis, regardless of Role.

No, my biggest problem is with the Art. I've been wondering for a while if FFG is dumping unused GoT art pieces on us. Seeker Initiate looks like a battle ready Spider and the first thing I thought of when I saw Kudaka was that Missandei had joined our Clan.

The only Mantis that the fictions/Art dept agree on is Yoritomo.

I have no problem with our beloved Mantis not looking Rokugani. But that hat has no business being anywhere near the Islands of Spice and Silk.

Perhaps. Though some clans have character abilities that need to be supplemented with the conflict cards.

What I am getting at is bid 4 instead of 5 (depending on situation of course). You will see that character coming before the draw phase, so you can plan your bid accordingly. You know your hand and your board and not losing conflicts is a big part of the game generally.

My guess is its an attempt at one of these. I realize that they should be worn much lower on the head and cover most of the face, but closest analog i could find that could sort of fit for it.

Honestly, it looks similar to Korean style hats, which fits in with the darker skinned, less "traditional" (read: Western / American depictions of) Japanese feel that they have been using for the Mantis Clan. Which I like. Showing Rokugan to be a more ethnically diverse place is a good thing, as it moves the game further from the Orientalism hard-coded into it.

Possibly a hybrid as Korean hats did tend towards flatter and smoother brims.

But that ki

Is not about East vs. West. It's about being on a boat.

Unless you are sailing in arctic waters, why would anyone wear a (apparently) fur brimmed hat like this on a ship? On a mountain lake? Sure (during winter). Honestly, the only places I would think that hat fits in would be a mountain village or high altitude plains.

Och, he's a bard in the mold of Ikoma himself.

Oh, so that’s a furry hat? I thought he has really big afro hair, and a fez on top of his head.

I think it's a combination of the odd angle we're seeing the hat and the art style...I believe our Mantis friend is wearing a form of Korean gat which was a (usually) wide-brimmed hat with conical top. It would probably be relatively lightweight and provide some protection from the sun, assuming it's a less translucent variant of the style.

ADD: Maybe we can ask the artist where they drew inspiration for the hat from. In a more tactful manner than straight up asking "what's wrong with his head/hat?"

I think the angle of the piece, combined with the resolution, makes it difficult to tell if it's actually furred, or if we're just seeing the (smudged) inside of the brim.

I'm a little surprised he'd wear a gat instead of an ngob or plain sugegasa, though; it feels like the gat is associated with more "well-to-do" people than the Mantis are meant to invoke, if that makes sense.

Despite everything, Mantis are still Samurai, which makes them upper class.
