Multispectral Camouflage and C3P0

By xTaloncor, in X-Wing Rules Questions

The brand new TIE Reaper expansion contains "Multispectral Camouflage" that basically allows you to discard a red target lock token if you managed to roll an evade result with a green die.

The question is if you can use C-3PO to guarantee an evade result? This question is also valid for R5-K6.

Yes, you can, for both. Precedent: 3PO works with Lando crew (per FAQ, I believe) which establishes that he works with green die rolls that are not defence rolls.

I'm not so sure. C-3PO does work on any green die roll, but he adds a result instead of changing the existing die. In Lando's case the card says, "For each evade result, assign 1 evade token" which would include the added result from C-3PO. I haven't seen the text on Multispectral Camouflage, but R5-K6 "roll 1 defense die. On an evade result" which could be argued to only only look at the die rolled and not any additional results that were added to the roll.

An interesting counterargument.

Palp definitely works with it, C3PO maybe not...?

Per C-3PO's card..

Once per round, before you roll 1 or more defense dice , you may guess aloud a number of evade results. If you roll that many evade results (before modifying dice), add 1 evade result .

The FAQ says..

C-3PO may be used in conjunction with the Lando Calrissian Upgrade card when performing Lando Calrissian’s special action. (FAQ, v.3.1.1, 7/24/2015)

Ergo, we can safely assume C-3PO can be used on any ability that involves "rolling 1 or more defense dice." Take note.. it's rolling .. not re-rolling .

So if you guess ZERO before rolling your green dice, you are guaranteed 1 evade result, so it works with both Multispectral Camouflage and R5, just like with Lando.

But the text on R5-K6 and Multispectral Camouflage is different. That might indicate that it just cares about the result of your rolled die and not about results in general. Or the wording is different because of the amount of dice being rolled.

I'm almost positive that is the case, but as often happens with this game. The specific language of a card may modify how another card interacts with it even if that was not the intended result.

I can see someone ruling either way for any card where you are rolling and checking the result for 1 green die, and given the lifespan of 1.0 I would recommend running it by the TO for any organized events before hand, and running it by your opponent for any pick-up games just to make sure everyone is on the same page.

As far as I'm concerned c3po doesn't work.

The card refers to a result rolled, not added. If you guess zero and roll zero your effective result is... zero. (Duh)

I think it is a valid argument to say the "on a _ result" is looking for that result in the pool. They could have used more specific verbiage that would have made it clear that only the first rolled die is counted.

I've already run it past the TOs and/or judges at the events I plan to attend and will abide their rulings in lieu of an unlikely FAQ.

(For the record: most of them said no go)

I see your point. I have to say though, strictly speaking the card says 'roll one defense die, on an evade result...' so it is speaking about to that exact result.

Guessing 0 with c3po is just reinforcing that, if you get what I mean. It's like saying... it's zero so I say zero so yes it's 1.

... no. ?
