Rebel Conversion Kit for a Small Collection?

By Shockley, in X-Wing

Currently, I plan to convert my 5 TIE Fighters (will be 7 with the new core set), 1 TIE Defender, and 1 TIE Bomber to 2.0. With a conversion kit. I plan to pick up a few more 1.0. Imperial ships before 2.0. drops.

I also own a Falcon and 2 X Wings (4 with the new core set). I was planning to trade these along with my TFA core set ships but may keep them if these 5 ships can be played competitively along with a Rebel expansion. I'd be open to buying one more small Rebel ship but would cap my Rebel collection with that. Thoughts, suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Well, there's only one Xwing in the core. Not sure that's a factor. You might be able to get a dial for the Falcon pretty easy with trading some of your extra Imperial stuff from the kit. The Xwings might be a challenge unless your local group has an odd guy picking up several kits or doesn't like Xwings.

Im sure there's a competitive list in there... No idea what it will look like though.

Good points. So I'll have 3 x wings. That's fine. Do you think I would be able to play a new version of the Fat Han with some basic X Wings based on what has been released?

  • At this stage Luke in his Xwing looks good.
  • You'll have Porkins in the core box too
  • Various Falcons... Various generic Xwings

As to how competitive? Can't say. We don't know yet how the full picture will look. I agree though you won't want to buy a Rebel kit for what you have.

What you need is at least 3 TIE Bombers and 2 Punishers. Nothing else!

$50 to convert six imperial ships (That fifth tie fighter will be left dial-less) isn't a great deal. And for your rebel collection? Eugh. I think I would try to trade your rebel stuff for more imperial stuff, although a lot of people have Falcons and X-wings already so it may be hard to trade.

Since you alluded to picking up more imperial ships in preparation for converting... well, we don't know what will be "meta" yet, but here are my thoughts on the various imperial ships available.

-Tie Advanced: Vader looks very strong. The rest of the unique pilots have some fun tools, but may struggle with getting the target locks they need. Strongly consider getting one, but I wouldn't get two.

-Tie Interceptor: We don't know much about the pilots making the jump to second edition. It's the most mobile ship in the game, but has become a lot more fragile against ships it can't arc dodge. One could be fun. If you fall in love with it, perhaps get a second.

-Tie Bomber: You have one, but they're sturdy and cheap enough you could probably run two if you like

-Lambda: We're getting a lot of new Imperial crew (about time!) You probably want a lambda, decimator, or Tie Reaper. Which one depends on you. I wouldn't get more than one imperial crew carrier unless you're going to seriously collect, though.

-Tie Phantom: The changes to the cloaking device and loss of an attack die make them less of a centerpiece ship like the defender. On the other hand, the new, cheaper phantom can take advantage of its lower profile to act as a flanker in ways it often couldn't before due to being a 40-point ship. One could be fun.

-Tie Defender: Running two of the buffed defenders won't leave you much room for other things. I wouldn't get two unless you adore the ship.

-Decimator: See my thoughts on the lambda

-Tie Advanced Prototype: The Inquisitor is interesting, but the other TAPs are in an awkward place as expensive combat ships with only 2 attack dice. Consider picking up one.

-Tie Punisher: The bomber's big brother. Consider it if you love missiles, torpedoes, and bombs, but the only unique things it has right now are a system slot (for a dedicated bomber) and the unique pilots. Low on my list of recommendations.

-Tie Striker: Fragile but fun. Consider getting multiple if you enjoy them, since they're good in swarms.

Tie Agressor: We... have no idea what this think does beyond carry a strange assortment of secondary weapons. Another one I hesitate to reccomend without more info.

-Alpha-Class Starwing, a.k.a. the Assault Gunboat: A munitions carrier that plays differently to other other such ships thanks to its ability to fire them after slamming. Can also be run as a cannon carrier if you want control options. Worth it, and good in multiples if you like them.

-Tie Reaper: See my thoughts on the lambda. Note that the 2.0 cards in this expansion do not come in the conversion kit, which might make it more appealing.

I disagree. That's less than $10 per ship, which is considerably less than the $20 they'd each cost new. Plus you have all the extra bits in case you find some first edition X-Wing at a garage sale or a game store's bargain bin somewhere down the line.

So it's a bit off topic but I think the tie fighter dial is unchanged in 2.0 from 1.0, the only differences I can see are that greens are now blues and the shape is different, seeing as this is the case do you think it will be allowed to use 1.0 Tie Fighter Dials in 2.0 games, I plan to do it casually for sure as I have way more generic Tie Fighters than I have other imperial ships to convert. So assuming you could get all the other components for the ship (baseplate, card, etc.) do you think you could do this at say a tournament? Other than arbitrary rules I see no real reason why someone couldn't in theory.

As an added bonus, the OP gets everything they need to fly all of the ships they don't have, except for the models. So in casual games and even some tournaments, the OP could now field Gunboats and a Lambda to go along with those TIE fighters or a couple of Auzitucks to go along with the X-Wings, as long as everyone is cool with not having the models.

I plan to add Imperial Aces, a TIE Advanced, and a Lambda to round out my collection for this year. If my non Imperial ships are hard to trade, I'll sell them locally cheap or trade 2 for 1.
