Dear devs: are we required to buy new ships?

By Voloch, in X-Wing

I'll throw this here, too, in case you didn't see it in the other thread. From the FFG Live Stream from Worlds day 1:

"For ships that are not in Wave 1, that will have new cards, there will be an upgrade path for existing players...we're not going into exact specifics. It's going to be similar in terms of what you get in the Conversion Kits, whether it will all be grouped together or separate - don't worry about that yet. But there will be a path to get the stuff without re-buying the ship."

I'm in the same place. Looking at the rebel conversion kit, norra and evaan aren't part of it. The same is for thane in the x-wing expansion: it seems that he's not part of the conversion kit..

uh... yes they are. Thane may be in the core. I can't remember but he's either in the conversion kit or in the core.

I think there are two elements that make up a larger more general question. 1) Buying ships you already own to get new upgrades or pilots, and 2) Buying new ships to get new upgrade cards that can be used on existing ships (sometimes known as the "do I really have to buy a ship I don't want to get a card I do want?").

We've already seen a clear answer of yes to the first one. Despite the conversion pack and future upgrade paths, one has to buy the Renegades pack for 2.0 content that will otherwise not be available - specifically the U-wing and X-wing pilots. And this same pack along with the Reaper release also have examples of #2 - Krennic will be an Imperial crew that is only sold with the Reaper and likewise for Saw.

I don't think it's a realistic expectation not to have to buy new ships at some point. They've said that they will try to avoid players having to buy a pack from a faction that they don't collect but there's bound to be at least a few cards in scum packs that can be used for Rebels and Imperials and vice versa.

From the video, all pre- wave XIV will be included in the conversion kits, so I am happy with that.
Wave XIV will include both 1.0 and 2.0, which also makes me happy.
