One of my players thinks I'm a Troll. Should I care?

By Mark Caliber, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Hey all.

During my last session After Action Review, one of the players mentioned that I have a tendency to be a "Troll."

Based on recent Ancestry DNA & Genealogical records I AM about 70% Scandinavian so I think being a "Troll" has some strong cultural & genetic undercurrents to validate this accusation.

However, I'm having trouble figuring out how I should react to this criticism. Do I puff my chest out and issue forth a deep diabolical laugh of exultation at my success? or Should I take this as needed corrective criticism?

I think what I need help understanding is what might this younger player mean by using the word "Troll?" I don't think he's literally referring to me being a poly-dactyl handed trickster intent on spreading mischief and sowing discord, but maybe that's exactly what he means? But as a GM isn't it my job to spread mischief and sow discord so that the PC's can face these obstacles and come out triumphant on the other side of the the harrowing hero's journey?

The good news seems to be that other than channeling my ancestors Oetherworld demons, I seem to be doing okay as a Star Wars RPG GM.

Your insights are appreciated. Thanks!

Did he give any reasoning for his accusation?

I agree. As a GM, it is your job to "troll" the players. In other words, your entire job is to add complications.

Would need their reasoning.

Adding complications is standard part of GMing. But if you are a GM that always makes the players plans fail outside their control, then maybe you can be a troll too.

Answer: "You have the wrong address." You are asking a bunch of strangers on a message board what one of your players intended when they called you a "troll." We can't answer that question. They can. Ask them. Once you have that information and share it we can offer meaningless and irrelevant opinions about whether you should be offended or not.

I definitely plan to ask, when I get another chance. I'm beginning here to see if anyone else has come across this.

No worries, I'll talk on Tuesday and I'll try to add more relevant examples and comments. In the meantime, have a good weekend!

Complicating the curveball that they found down the sidetrack that derailed them from dealing with the last loop you threw...

That's one possible way to troll a group of players - a chain reaction of 'while you're trying to deal with X, Y gets in the way' that ensures there's never any real progress on anything, let alone the original plot element. It's a bad habit that's easy to fall into.
