So, on the first ability of Yaotl, it says it gives a bonus on each skill equal to matching pips on the card in the graveyard...
Can we get a clarification how this really works? Seems like people are torn between:
1. You check how many pips match eachother then it gives a bonus on any skill equal to the amount (regardless of pip type)
2. You check how many pips match the stat you are testing and get a bonus equal to the amount of pips.
Which one is right?

I believe if your top card has a Book, Head and Fist icons, you would get a +1 to each of those skills. This matters for cards that have "add agility to your fist" cards.
Email FFG if you need clarity.

Edited by JobuPretty certain it means icons matching the test, not icons matching each other. You can't just load up on desperate cards and get +4's to anything every turn. You can get the +4 if it matches your test though.

I don't think this is correct. It explicitly says matching icons, which would be the number of icons matching the type of the test.
This is standard for skill cards. If you commit a skill card that has Intellect and Agility to a Lockpicks test, only the Intellect adds.

It also says " get a bonus to each skill ". I interpret that to mean to all 4 skills. How would you interpret it?
This isn't a card commit effect, it is modifying a skill value like Beat Cop does.

Knew it wasn't committing, but the "matching" part limited it to what was in the test. But on further digging, I think the common player terminology isn't actually what's in the rules. The rules call them "appropriate" skill icons.
So looks right

There aren't a lot of situations where that's useful. It really just leaves rogue cards so Wendy and Lola can potentially boost both their agility and whatever the actual test skill is for cards like cheap shot or lockpicks.
Just for additional clarification, I'm pretty sure you can't commit a card to that test and get double the icons, because, unless I'm mistaken, cards you commit to a test don't move to the discard pile until after the test, meaning the card utilized by Yaotl would have to be on the top of your discard pile at the beginning of the test.

Yes and no. Committed cards go to the discard after the test, but any other Fast events (or triggers that cause something to be discarded, including Yaotl’s other ability) played in the middle will be discarded, and you can then trigger the ability.

The trouble with that is that Yaotl specifies you get a bonus to all skills for each matching icon. That would imply that, for instance, using Yaotl during a Lockpicks test with Desperate Search on top of the discard would give you +4 to all skills, for a total of +8 (+4 int, +4 agi). It's more likely that you're only supposed to get +4 to Intellect, because that's the skill that matches the icons (and, likewise, Run For Your Life would give you +4 Agility, and Infighting would give you +2 to both, so you get a total +4 to the test whichever one is on top).

You are reading matching as the icons matching each other. It should be read as matching your skills (2 agility icons means +2 to the matching skill and 1 will icon is a +1 to the matching skill). Matt has clarified.

Its not or at least it was not intended to be. In your example, an investigator would get +4 to perception since there are 4 icons on Desperate Search that match the intellect skill. There are zero icons that match the agility skill so you get a +0 to that skill.

Exactly. I was saying that the other interpretation (that you get Yaotl's bonus for each icon that matches the skill being tested) would logically result in a +8 from Desperate Search, since Yaotl applies to each skill. That seems wrong to me. If you use Yaotl on Desperate Search, you get +4 intellect, +0 to everything else.
However, that applies regardless of the skill being tested. When you commit a card, all non-matching icons are ignored. When you Yaotl a card, each icon applies to its given skill. That means you can use Yaotl on Run For Your Life even if you're not testing agility. Of course, that would only give you a +4 to agility, not to the skill being tested, so that's normally irrelevant. It does become relevant, however, when you've got cards like Lockpicks.
You cannot commit Run For Your Life to a Lockpicks test, and if you do commit a card with agility pips (such as Infighting, which has 2 intellect and 2 agility), those pips don't do anything. Yaotl ignores that restriction.
