Representing advanced ships (TFA etc.)

By Pewpewpew BOOM, in X-Wing

I was thinking about the Resistance and FO items that have predicessors (T-70 from the T-65 and such).

I wonder if FFG will still give a tech slot but also provide more linked actions to make the later ships feel more advanced.

A T-70 that could boost and BR would be really impressive in the 2.0 environment. ?

So how do you represent a Silencer then? Or a Resistance A-Wing?

Triple chained actions?

I think the roles of the ship should remain the same, with the same limitations. Having tech slots is plenty.

I am not sure a Silencer is supposed to be a fancy Interceptor, so I am not sure.

Resistance A-Wing could do a BR or boost as a linked action in any other action.

What else it's supposed to be? It is definitely more maneuverable than any X-Wing

They have said that the resistance, at least, is supposed to mainly be “super-aces” as a faction identity, so have insanely expensive, but very powerful ships makes a bit a sense. Also mitigates the small number of designs the faction has.

I don't mind if the ships are a little more expensive and powerful, but I wouldn't think they'd be too much so. Technology appears to be more stable than in our world, so the difference between a T-65 and a T-70 should be much less than the difference between a P-51 and an F-16, for instance.

Given the shape, and who flies it, it's a second-generation (well, technically third-generation if you count the prototype) TIE Advanced.

Hence the shields and systems slot.

To be more exact, it is the Disney version of the TIE Avenger. Which is why I don't anticipate ever seeing the latter in the game.

Multiple linked actions isn't necessarily more advanced. The TIE interceptor chains together manoeuvre actions because of its manoeuvrability, not specifically because it's a high-tech ship. I'd expect much the same of eta actis interceptors if we ever get the republic as a faction.

The T-70 is portrayed as more manoeuvrable than the T-65, but not that much more (compared to other classes of ship).

The Tech Slot does give the ships a big advantage to start with, depending on which tech upgrades are retained.

Advanced Optics is very powerful for its cost but the general lack of action economy in the game makes me think retained tokens might still exist but would be a more expensive option than they are now.

I think we can assume the T-70 will pick up an extra hull, like the T-65, to represent a 'baked in' integrated astromech. Barrel roll as well as boost? I don't see why not. When the ships were in the same faction, they needed enough of a separate identity to make both classes equally attractive, but right now the T-70 is the only combat snubfighter the resistance has; it needs to be flexible enough to play jouster and flanker (with suitable respective investment of torpedo, tech, astromech and mod) or heavy swarmer (when generics are fielded basically 'clean') with equal aplomb.

I just hope they give the Silencer the bakes in ability from treat tracker.,,,,,,,,,,,,and give Kylo a more relevant movement ability

I wouldn't be surprised to see that stay 'as is'. Tech upgrades will be a key thing for Resistance and First Order, as they're essentially the sequel trilogy's 'unique thing'.

What tech upgrades are we likely to see? You probably won't see that many in the first pass.

  • Given that afterburners already gives almost everyone access to boost-whilst-stressed, primed thrusters may well be for the chop
  • Other than that, the two main themes of Tech are:
    • Spend a token for a different effect (weapons guidance, sensor cluster, threat tracker, targeting synchroniser)
    • Hang on to an unspent round token (advanced optics, comms relay)
  • Much as the latter are generally the better, with access to multiple simultaneous tokens really, really reigned in - push the limit is gone and I don't think I've seen any linked actions where one of them isn't either reposition or rotating a turret.
