Tentacles? Huh?

By Fizz, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Tentacle
A figure with the Tentacle ability (referred to as the “controlling figure”) places a number of tentacle markers adjacent to itself equal to its rank in Tentacle when placed on a map. Each tentacle has attributes according to the chart below and moves and attacks independently of the controlling figure. Tentacles activate after the controlling figure each round.

Tentacles cannot move farther than three spaces away from the controlling figure, but may enter and even end their movement in the same space as an enemy figure. No more than one tentacle may be in a single space. An enemy figure in the same space as a tentacle is Grappled (as the ability). A tentacle that begins its activation already having Grappled an enemy figure may either Constrict (as the ability) or move the enemy figure (and itself) one space (usually to pull the enemy closer to the controlling figure’s mouth.)

Those are the rules for tentacles.

Questions:

If a hero is in the same space as a tentacle, since attacks target the square, would attacks directed at the tentacle also affect the grappled hero?

Would the hero who is attacking a tentacle is his own space hit himself?

What about how tentacles move? What if the figure with tentacle moves faster than his tentacles do (I am specifically thinking The Kraken, since he is a Lieutenant who can declare a Run)? Does he leave them behind? Does he have to move slow enough for the tentacles to keep up, or do they just have to attempt the stay within 3 squares?

1) Both tentacle and hero are affected by the attack.

2) Heros cannot attack their own spaces, unless Dark Charmed.

3) Good questions, have been asked before. I am not aware of any answer to them, they are definitely in need of offical answers.

Wow, so if a hero cant attack his own space, (and he's melee) he's basically screwed then, since he cant spend movement points and can only attack normally. That doesn't seem right.....since I can effectively grapple the melee and then move them one space away from any other model.

I seem to recall someone suggesting that it doesn't really matter because the tentacles aren't fast enough to have any realistic chance of ever grappling a hero that stays on the ship and tries to avoid them (I have not investigated the veracity of this argument myself).

It looks like it's not a matter of speed, but a matter of distance. If the Kraken cannot leave the water, there is no way the tentacles could reach the heroes if they simply moved to the other side of the ship. Weak.

This would effectively make the Kraken the most worthless Lieutenant in the game.

Well, the Kraken and tentacles could theoretically circle the ship, if they were fast enough to do so in a single turn. Unless the middle of the ship is unreachable from either side.

The classic image of a kraken gripping a ship, of course, involves tentacles on both sides simultaneously...seems strange and sad if SoB can't replicate that.

but the ship is 6 square wide and the tentacles cant move more than 3 spaces away from the Kraken, so no circling.... =(
