This Shouldn’t Work

By Innese, in X-Wing Squad Lists

As it says in the title, I don’t know what is going on with this list. Currently it stands undefeated across 2 casual nights and won first at a store tournament, never giving up more than 46 points (or in most cases 31).

Its just stupidly durable between the 2 ‘Bombers’ and Red Ace with his regen & evade shenanigans.

Its faced down Poe/Dash, Poe/Miranda, along with assorted Scum lists and a single Imperial list (That was made of a Striker & 2 Punishers). Please explain how this is working.

Crimson Squadron Pilot — B/SF-17 Bomber 25
Accuracy Corrector 3
Hyperwave Comm Scanner 1
Crossfire Formation 2
Ship Total: 31

Crimson Squadron Pilot — B/SF-17 Bomber 25
Accuracy Corrector 3
Hyperwave Comm Scanner 1
Crossfire Formation 2
Ship Total: 31

"Red Ace" — T-70 X-Wing 29
R2-D2 4
Comm Relay 3
Autothrusters 2
Ship Total: 38

I assume the way to play this list is

- fly at least in loose formation to benefit from the title on the bombers

- therefore use focus for defense all the time since you

- always use the accuracy corrector for two hits (or keep the crits if you roll natties but then you didn't need modification)

- pick your time when to spend the evade on red ace, this is an interesting combination

- try to keep red ace alive and let the bombers tank, ideally save one if it is down low (see points scored)

- block like a boss with your ps1 bombers, maybe even block the other bomber if it guarantees a block on an enemy ace, since the bombers are tanks

Playing against it, maybe I'd focus the red ace with concentrated fire and then whittle down the bombers. Apart from that, deny the points above : -)

Those bombers can be surprisingly tanky. 12 HP plus guaranteed evades each turn can go a long way, and the bump potential works out well. On the other hand, I've seen Bombers die wicked fast. TIE/D Defenders are brutally strong against them.

I've seen triple Bomber, mostly built-up like that, it looked fairly good, and Red Ace seems like an interesting swap-in. Triple Bomber kinda has hard-counters, though... it can be hard for them to push damage on autothrusters ships like generic Silencers or control bots, or against like a C-3PO Lowhhrick. Red Ace diversifies the kinds of threats in the list. A 3-dice, single-arc, single-action ship isn't super scary, but sometimes it's the thing you need.

^ THAT. THAT is the reason my triple bomber (SPACE WHALES) squad list has tourney losses. 100% of my losses are to THAT. Rest of the list is irrelevant, a gunship with C-3PO is enough to defeat your list.

It is also the reason I went from a very similar list to one that has swapped in some bombs...C-3PO can't do anything about bombs... *maniacal laughter*

SPACE WHALES

Run in Triplicate: PS 1 Crimson Squadron Pilot with Accuracy Corrector, Seismic Charges, Crossfire Formation, & Tactical Jammer.

I can hear the arguments now: Tactical Jammer is a necessity. Playing LEAP FROG is a valid strategy. It causes 1 of 2 things to happen: either your opponent has to spreads their shots to avoid giving you extra defense dice or you get extra defense dice to modify with your defensive-use-only focus token (thus the potential to block a lot more incoming damage outright). Either way you're better off. Furthermore, with clever maneuvering, you can force the spreading of fire by blocking enemy ship movements: this way you get both the spreading of shots and extra defense dice. Forcing your opponent to shoot through a tactical jammer (while also triggering Crossfire Formation) is amazing, it gives you TWO dice to roll plus a FREE evade result!!! Your space whale is like a freaking TIE Interceptor just with 4X the health and dice that can't ALL come up blank!!!
