Will the App be working for GenCon?
Again I have no solid evidence but I would be shocked if anything besides the cores and wave 1 was at gencon. The tournaments are even threat cookie cutter so no official reason to have more than that available. Besides this is huge compared to before, gencon has released a wave early sure but thats been 4-5 things. If they prerelease everything it will mega spoil sept because people will flock to posts of every little thing. Now the app who knows it’s free anyway which gives them 0 incentive to out it early.
Honest question: why do you want the conversion kit early?
I‘m most interested in the rules. As soon as we have them we can proxy accordingly. But not having to proxy components while lacking the rules seems not so helpful to me.
Of course I assume here that the conversion kits have no ruleset, no damage deck, no templates and not even point costs or threat cards. (E: also that the core and wave 1 are not released early)
edit: just saw on facebook that apparently the core sets are sold, too? In that case going for the conversion kit makes perfect sense, and so is wanting the app. Hopefully there are points in some written form?

Rushing out the app for the very few people at Gencon could seriously backfire, if the app at that release has still issues - cause that a lot more people might reconsider if they really will spend all the money for 2.0.
Getting a negative impression from the app in this "2.0 news craving state" the community is in right now could be quite bad for sales numbers.
On the other hand, so would 'you had us dump all those $$$ on conversion kits only to have them completely unusable until September. This is a rip-off'. Having the kits but not the app available at GenCon will likely also generate some outrage.

I wonder if they will hand out beta access codes or something to everyone. The 1% get to play with their toys, FFG gets a month of good testing before final release.
A soft release at Gencon is something I would expect. The only reason not to would be if the app wasn't in a usable state at all.

Honestly, because product distribution is an issue in Canada... I'd rather pick up the conversion early and know I've got one, than wait months past release and still be stuck in 1.0 madness.
No, and it's not going to be ready to go in September either. FFG is going to have a nice baptism by fire when they have literally millions of people crashing their app day one. Expect for multiple day 1 and week 1 fixes to stop it from crashing constantly.

Oooh.... We got an optimist here.

They will presumably make the squad building PDF available at the same time that the app goes live, so even if the app has issues you can still manually build lists.
I believe the App will be quite functional up to all the Wave1 material, thus allowing the new edition to start seemlessly immediately. Then all new updates will be updated as a Wave is released. I also expect the new FAQ to be published as well. both online and through the app itself.

That seems unlikely, assuming it's not designed by a complete idiot. FFG have already said you won't need to have a constant internet connection to use the app, which means it'll be downloaded to your phone and data will be stored locally. The app will be hosted by Google/Apple on their stores so there really shouldn't be any issues downloading it either. Once it's on your device you won't need to communicate with any servers to use it.

They will need to have a feature that retrieves the data in app, though, else they'll need to push updates to update the data which is an issue on IOS. I expect FFG to know that, though, this is far from their first app release.

That would make the conversion kits pretty useless, as you could not field even half of the ships in them.
I SERIOUSLY hope that by september ALL ships in the conversion kits are playable via a functional app or at least the pdf.
Don't forget the web page as a format. There should be 3 ways to build lists. App, web page, and PDF.
App: There are a lot of issues that can go wrong with the app, but they are probably stability issues with a particular OS. Weird reactions with other apps, connection issues, and general stability (not crashing or locking up). I know iTunes has some hefty testing they require before it can be put on iTunes.
Overall, though, I don't see an issue with number of people crashing anything. If the app works, it connects to FFG to validate the latest list builder and you just build everything with local data in the app.
Web: This is probably going to be available whenever they want. Its basically like your standard web list builder. As long as all the data is loaded properly in it, there should be no issues stability. It's all browser traffic. FFG can take the web traffic as I doubt there are hundreds of thousands hitting the servers at the exact same time. Even if there are, they can probably spin up a few more virtual servers for the workload pretty easy.
FFG might not want to release the web page prior to the App, just because they don't want the info out early or doomsayers use it as "proof" that 2.0 sucks and FFG isn't ready for it.
PDF: This is the easiest solution, but the worst. They surely know what the points and options are at GenCon, but it's the most cumbersome method out there. Still, pretty darn stable. Just host a PDF. No way that so many gamers choose to download it at the exact moment to hurt their bandwidth.
I don't see why they WOULDN'T have the conversion kits ready. I would be quite disappointed if they did not have them. I would be seriously considering NOT waiting in line for just the Core set. I'd probably wait just to order the T-65 damage deck. I would just stop playing 1.0 and wait for 2.0.
