Why do people want a super star destroyer?

By Belphegor07, in Star Wars: Armada

I often see people talking on here about how much they want a super star destroyer in the game and I'm confused why. Now obviously I'm a star wars fan like the rest of you so another beautiful model would be great and at this point I'll take any bit armada news I can get! But I'm really struggling to see how it would fit into the game as it currently stands

It's scale is so large. Now obviously we have a sliding scale with this game and I have no problem with using a bit of imagination whilst playing, but with a ship who's defining characteristic is its massive size, could this ship be represented in a way that feels right? Is a scaled down SSD missing the ships wow factor?

Does the game need a more powerful ship then its current big guns? Surely to feel like the massive weapon of death that it is, the SSD would need to throw more dice than an ISD or any of the Mon Calamari equivalents could. Is that a good thing? Does that help the game balance at all? The game is primarily won by playing to the objectives, would more dice throwing mean we lose this and armada because more of a death match game?

Or perhaps it's size is represented with expensive points or loads of hull? We keep complaining that Rieekan games turn into point fortressing and slow games, would the SSD not just cause the same issue? A 200 point ship that doesn't die sounds like a less exciting game to me.

This isn't meant as an insult or an argument to anyone that does want an SSD in the game, I just can't see why the game needs it and I would like to be convinced because riding aboard the hype train is much more fun then the cynical bus that I'm on.

I always like the Executor-class. Very much so. But I hope they never bring it to the table. Its just beyond the scale.

You have clearly identified most of the problems, so why do people want it? Because it is an iconic Star War ship with screen time, and for some big really is better, there is a market for it as people have bought 3rd party versions.

IMO the best way to have it in the game would be as a 6*3 mat, with plastic bridge and some weapons emplacements, and make it a sort of campaign box with set of different missions, add a bunch of new upgrade cards price it as a large expansion and it would sell well to existing player base and might even have the epic factor to attract players in, but it would not satisfy the people that want a big ship in their hands.

So if we get it its more likely to be a 2' model that doesn't really match the scale, will be unbalanced, will require its own game mode, and will be hideously expensive. I only hope that they don't include any upgrade cards for normal 400pt play that are then meta, like they did with the CR90 and Raider in X wing. Can you imagine the response if they pack in a "fix the Victory card"?

@Pwmf I think they would definetly add upgrade cards for standard in that pack to ensure they sell a lot.

I like you're idea about a campaign. I really enjoyed the correllian one so I think a SSD campaign of sorts would be a good way to implement it without damage standard tournament play

It’s a tricky issue. But I love the model & it seems such a shame to not see it.

Scale is naturally a big issue. But then I think of the cr90B in the game. A ship that has the same blue dice battery as a Vic2!? That’s just insane. And that’s not even talking about the model size.

So I can deal with an SSD scales down. Say twice the length of an ISD. I’d have more arcs for guns so it’s not a 15 dice side arc.

Is this a trick question? :D

Anyway, think on this:

Each of these is about 1 order of magnitude bigger than the next smaller one.

X-wing --> CR90 --> ISD --> SSD

So if X-wing --> CR90 --> ISD can fit on the sliding scale, why not the SSD?

Honestly, I'd likely never even pla it. I just want a SSD model of FFG quality that doesn't cost $500

I'm just hoping any SSD isn't part of some epic play Armada. Does anyone really want that?

I simply can't wrap my head around why anyone would even question a Super Star Destroyer. Does not compute. I don't question Oxygen, I'm just thankful to breathe it in. Much like the air I breathe, so is a Super Star Destroyer also crucial to life.

Praises be unto ye, oh Lord Piett. May your commands glisten through the halls of eternity, and into my soul. So Say We All.

This right here

"Big thing make things go boom."- Official imperial naval doctrine

Those that I cannot crush with words, I shall crush with the Star Destroyers of the Imperial Nav... Oh my bad, wrong Empire.

Because SSDs will MAGA (Make A-Wings Great Again)!

I think if they do an SSD it'll be for epic-style play. Kinda like how they made Raiders and GR75s for X-wing. I don't think you can actually use them in a regular game.

Now obviously I'd buy it anyway because it's awesome, but I just don't see it fitting into a regular game. But it's gonna be 2 feet long and cost 400 points by itself so every Imperial fleet for a while would look pretty darn similar. I can't imagine FFG would add it as a real ship for a new wave. Maybe as an "extra" for folks who want one for their campaigns or custom games.

But, that said, what do we think Admiral Piett would do? Are there any other ships be could come out with?

An SSD could easily be made, and acceptable on the table, at about +50% the size of the current ISD, at around 180 points. I'd expect something like this before EpicArmada.

2 feet long? Doubt it, it will be about double the size of an sd if one were to get released.

A-wings have been great since Wave 1.

Agreed. Just trying to bring a little light-hearted humor to the thread... obviously didn’t work.

I’m sure the answers you are after are here somewhere:

You know this thread has fallen off the front page of the forum. Some one really should post on it to bring it back up to the top. I'm sure its on someones Armada Bingo.....

I get so sick and tired of people saying that a SSD would need to be TOO BIG to fit on the table.... (Because apparently they don't realize that Armada is a sliding scale), that I actually hope they make the Executor SMALLER Than an ISD just to spite them.

Currently we have S, M, L size ships, it would be nice to have a XL size ship, however to have a XXXL ship like epic scale in X-Wing will not be convenient. So agree with people who say the size should be x1.5 or x2 of ISD.

I think one way or another, eager Armada player will have a SSD but the real question is what will Rebels have to counter the SSD?

Nothing can resist the power of a SUPER STAR DESTROYER!

I don't know - I get tired of people saying it's a sliding scale so it's fine. I totally agree that FFG would make the model itself look great. But it will not look great next to the other stuff on the table because it would have to be absurdly small. We know the counterpoint already - the CR90 is absurdly big next to the other ships, even at the sliding scale, and it looks fine to most(?) people... I just don't think the same would be true of an SSD. Also, I still haven't heard a satisfying idea for how it would actually play on the table - how many dice would it throw, just 2 attacks per turn same as everything else, how many shields, etc.

IMHO the bottom line is that if FFG thinks the product would sell, they'll make it regardless of how good it is on the table, whether that's good or bad I'm not sure.
